FEMININE CORNER.
BuUding-np Exercises.
It seems peculiar to many people that
certain pi-escribed exercises will build up
I a slim person, although the very same
movements will reduce one who ls stout.
The reason for this, in general, is that
both the thin and the stout person ave
usually in that condition through want of
proper exercise, the variatiou between the
two being caused by a difference m con-
stitution. The stout person's assimilation
is probably much better, or perhaps the
slighter woman may have some internal
disorders, which would often disappear
with coiToetive exercises. So the stout
person may very well follow thc exercises
given below. The advice which was given
to the men some weeks back was the
soundest that I can offer. In case you
did not sec it at the time it will bear
repeating. If you live in town, join a
class of physical culture for the following
reasons: Jt is cheap; you have someone
"who knows" to direct your activities,
watcli for mistakes, and tender advice:
you have that competitive spirit to spur
you on; yon can participate in atldetic
games, and last but not least you have
the society and friendship of so many kin-
dred spirits.
My women leaders would do well to
scan thc articles in the men's section, for
most of the exercises given there -except-
ing those on weight lifting ave suitable-for
both sexes, with the use of a little discre-
tion. Try to enjoy every minute of your
exercising period-always try to look
ahead and think of the wonderful results
you will obtain if you get the right start.
If you start out by getting np earlier
in the morning and exercising for fifteen
minutes regularly, I'll guarantee you will
soon want to increase your period to a
a half hour. If you exercise in the even-
ing do not do so until an hour after
your meal. You will find it advantageous
to relax for about half an hour before your
evening meal after coining home from
work.

Thc first exercise is a stretching ono,
which is a good one for thc muscles and
nerves of the body. Stand with feet to-
gether and hands on hips. Pull back
«boulders and chest as far as you can. in-
haling as you <*o back and exhaling when
you relax and come forward. Exercise
number two is a variation of number one.
Stand near a wall and bend over back-
wards until you can touch it with your
bands; then try climbing down backwards,
see figure 1.
Practise until you can go right down
; to the floor.
Exercise number three is excellent for
j the muscles round the waist. You will also
I find it beneficial for the muscles of the
back of thighs and calves if done strenu-
ously. Stand with body erect. Touch the
toes on the right loot with the fingertips
of the left hand, then alternate with tho
right hand. This exercise was illustrated
in the issue of August 3. Number four is
the floor dip described in the previous
issue. A splendid exercise for the triceps
and shoulder muscles. Exercise number
five: Begin with position illustrated, rock
ing the body forward and then backward.
This is an exercise for the abdomen and
waist, particularly the abdomen. The
muscles of the back arc also brought into
play.
Exercise number six will be accomplished
after persistent practice of No. 2. When
you are in the position shown in figure
3 endeavour to walk first one way and then
the other while supporting your weight on
all fours. This will not be done easily at
first but persevere for this is a good all-
round developer.
