Notes by J. Haddocks (Messrs. Bossfter
ead Co., Hay-sfc., Perth.)
DECEMBER.
The Vegetable Garden.
The following seeds eau he sown tin's
mouth : -
French beans Mustard
Cabbage Pumpkin.
Cape gooseberry Squash*
Capsicum Radish
Cauliflower Rhubarb.
Cress Spinach.
Cucumber Sweet corn.
Egg plant Tomato.
Onion Veg. marrow.
Clean vp the vegetable garden by re-
moving ali old pea haulms and any oth-
er remnants of crops that are now done
witfr, as it is only waste of ground to
allow them to occupy space that could
otherwise be utilised profitably. If
the ground is regularly cropped, it is
surprising what a lot of vegetables can
bo obtained from a small extent of
ground.
French beanB are now becoming fair-
ly plentiful, further sowings as listed
in above calendar may be made. On-
ions are coming on well, many growers
having harvested them by now. In
places where they are still growing,
care should be taken that the bulbs are
not covered with soil. The roots only
should be in the ground. The salad
plante trill need careful looking after.
The time of the year when they jaye
most appreciated1 ir now fast approach-
ing. Lettuces should be kept growing
quickly hy applications of liquid man-
ure ones a week, and plenty of water
during dry weather. Prepare beds" and
make small sowings of the various
seeds as listed above, taking care to
sow thinly and not to cover too deeply.
This matter was dealt with in last
week's notes. Do not omit a frequent
use of the hoe between the root« and
around the plants, and where manure
is available mulch whatever can ho
mulched.
The Flower Garden.
Care must be taken at this time of
the year, when planting out seedlings
of amarantlius, zinnias, cockscomb, por-
tulaca, etc.. to prevent them being
burnt by the sun. Each plant should
bo shaded with come light branches
round it, and especially on the emmy
side. The plants will, if attended to
in the watering, soon be able to dis-
pense with the shading.
If any primroses, polyanthus, and
such-like plants are cultivated, it will
be.a good plan if they are in an ex-
posed position, to lift them and replant
in ja, shady place where they will have
more chance of living, through the hot
summer. "Water the grouna thorough-
ly well before they arc lifted, 6o that a ,
good, ball of earth may be lifted with
tile plant. In the autumn'they can
be put back to their flowering quarters, i
Cannae are making a fine 6how just J
now, and supplied with plenty of'mois-
ture, will continue to do so for a long
time yet. Clumps of this plaa't_ can "be .
divided any time, - but willy of "course,'
need watering duriug dry weather. .
: Mention has from time to time been
made of liquid manure. Take care
not to make the liquid too strong. It
is better to apply it weak aud often
than risk scorching the roots with too I
strong a liquid. A safe rule, adopted i
by jnany gardeners is to apply liquid
fertilisers immediately after a good
watering with rflear Water. .
