ORIGINAL VERSE.
THE STATE WAR MEMORIAL,
I (By Lilian Wooster Greaves).
Not a'l the glorious avenues of trees
Where every wanton breeze
May dance and flirt with every frivolos»
leaf,
Can voice my lonely grief.
No portico, no «temple's grey facade,
So stately colonnade;
No halls wK-rc art may hide and science
grope,
Can speak my hidden hope.
'Tis not in t'hrotnging street and market-
place
I «find the strength and grace
To «teach my sotl«! to «VCTCome «her rue,
And live lier life «anew.
Ab no! tiie loving mourning human heart
Must crave a pla« apart
A shrine wiere earthly grief «may «comfort
sees,
And heavenly hope may speak.
So let us raise a solitary stone,
A shaft that stands alone.
'Twixt eai-t'h and «heaven «shall its blest
inessage be
A. «hope and memory.
There shall my soul breathe out her
lonely sigh
From, turf to tender «s>ky;
And wonder if the sacred dead can hear
And come anear.
