TURF TOPICS.
\By "Camoola.")
Taking advantage of ilie glorious weather
- which prevailed on Saturday, a large num-
ber of peopla journeyed , to Helena Vale.
Bookmakers won an all except one op the
races, but several of the successful «quines
were well supported. JE selected Moonyoon
. to win the Hurdle Hace, and the Fusillade
gelding duly materialised. Celloiet was
backed down to 7 to 4, and acted TUB mn
» ner-up; Ravel account jug for the other
el arter*. : Dr. Lunn was as well backed a«
the winner-both started at 1 to 2-and
ran fairly well. Pensacola, however,
shaped indifferently, bc and Sylvaoiujn be-
ing, the last to pass ihe post. The winner
was ridden by R. Spiers, one of the most
capable of our cross-country hotreemen,.
Although lititojc, on form, appeared lo be
?unbeatable iu thc First Class Plate, one
or two metallicians were prepared to lay
odds of 6 to 1 about the son of Valait,.
He started at 4 to 1, backers preferring
the ehauces of Shelbourne and Ardol. It
titoat, with Leonard in the saddle, ran
home an easy winner from Kilsyth and
Fiuitus, neither of which were greatly fan-
cied. Kilsyth paid a dividend of £A 4s.
Shelbourne cut and «trùck^hiinsclf during
the race, and bc and Ardol whippedjn the
field. Notwithstanding that «he had run
^ second to Devil's. March a week earlier,
Biddy Early was allowed to go out at 8
to I for the Second Class Plato, Full Tone
and Son of Flavus commanding most at-
tention from backers- Tho Pistol filly was
again ridden .by Sampson, and she scored
a comfortable victor}'- -Obanooka and Ayr
ton were the .place-petters- . puu Tone was
fourth, but Son of Flavus "is runiñng .yet,*'
to «se a sporting phrase- There were only
half a dozen runners in the principal
event-the Artillery Handicap-and that
good performer, Itedfetring, which started
favouriie, "won nicely from Tho Kubber and
Splice Gun. Do wndale started second fav-
ourite, despite the poor form «he has been
showing; - and I was not surprised to see
her run last. Redstring wae ridden by G.
Matthews,; who was due for a win. T. J.
Stratton captured the Third Class PlEte
with Down Town, a ' promising looking
three-year-old gelding by Dowdiugtown
from Malsterdelle. The winner waa almost
as well fancied as the place-getters-Lady
Clasp and Cuthbert. Marland, who waa
disqualified last year, but was recently re
granted his jockey's licence, had the
winning mount. On paper, Gentle
Mary looked a certainty for
* the final event-the Cavalry Handicap-ana
accordingly the daughter of Fidelis was
mado an odds-on favouriie. ghe, however,
suffered defeat by Sir Rhubarb '(12 to 1),
whioh . won like a tradesman- Embroglio
carried 9.11 inlo third place, and paid a
dividend 0f £A Ile. The winner wa« pi-
loted bv Chandler, who came into promi
nence as a jockey by riding four winners
in ono afternoon on the. Helena Vale
course.
The V.A.T.C. held o. meeting at Caulfield
cn Saturday, when a number of Australian
Hurdle sud Steeplechase candidates sported
silk. Wisconsin (10 to 1) won the Leam-
ington Hurdles -from Bécassine and 8ir
Prim ; and Bonnie Gedge defeated Cá-
gala, Bullawarra {favourite) and eight
others in the Godfrey Watson Steeplechase.
Wisconsin may rna well In the Australian
.Hurdle Bace, for he is e good stayer.
Bonnie George does not incur a penalty
for the Australian Steeplech&fie. in which
he has been handicapped nt 910. Hs was
in receipt of over 3st. from Bullawarra on
-Saturday. Our correspondent states" that
after-.tine racing at Caulfield, the horses
mostly spoken of in connection with'the
Australian Hurdle -Race were Lord Grey,
Van Homreigh, «nd Wisconsin ; and itt oou
nection with the Australian Steeplechase
Bullawarra, Battleship] Uxbridge, «ad B«b
: benluke. The Lillimur Two-year-old re
. suited in an exciting finish, Her Queen
and: Tiflis effecting a dead-heat, with' the
favourite, King's Bounty, only » .half hea4
«ff. It will be remembered there wa« only
«. head between Tint* and Her Queen in
.iie Two-year-old Mile, at Flemington, Al
gol winning thal race by half a leaetíi.
Algol just missed a place on Saturday.
There were 14 runners'for'tba Murrum-'
foeeua Handicap, for which Polygamist, was
the opening favourite at 5.to £. Aristaeus
soon supplanted him, while at the finish
Defence wa« in most demand afc 7 to 2.
with Aristaeus at 4 to 1, and Polygamist
at 5 to 1, Defence (a very unlucky horse)
looked all over a winner ia tho straight,
but - Polygamist, which was hard ridden
over tho last six furlongs by "B. Lewis,
got up in time to win by half a neck.
The winner is an imported horse, and ie
evidently a good stayer. It is - said
that bo still looks "on tue big side,
The torin of -Polygamist in England was
nothing out *f the «ray-(he won one race
as a two-ye-ar-old and one as a three-year
old)-but -he may be put down nu a game
one, and also a stayer. The Adelaide train-
er. J. McCann. who has him, is now set-
tled at Caulfield. Polygamist has 7.12 in
the Caulfield Cup, and 7.7 in . the Melbourne
Cup. There were 21 runners for the Kern-
brook Trial. Fighting Bob, and Lord Tom
being the favourites. Rudas made « good
deal of the running. Lord Tom took com-
mand at the distance, and won by a
head from .Sir Traquair, witlí Rudas a good
third, and Tongkali fourth. The winner is
aa. imported horse and was brought -to
Australia by James HayèR, Sir Traquair
was galloped on in the course of-thc race,
aud rattier severely cut. The meeting 'can
eluded ^witb the Malvina. Welter, run over
a mile- Toleration^, ' the "favourite, ran ee
oond,.the race going to the 'hitherto un-
lucky Pochee, which finished strongly under
the judge's box.
Thc withdrawal or" Flagpole from the
Blackboy Hurdle Race run at Helena Vale
on Saturday robbed the event of a certain
amount of interest. It. is questionable,
however, whether the son of Mural would
have beaten Moonyoon, which was always
well ' placed. Celloiet is a good mare, but
I thought that punters were making agrave
error m backing thc daughter of Timbrel
_to beat Mr. Grant's c'hestnut at the weights,
which favoured Moonyoon by 16!h. Celloist
Jmishcá very "fast, but, unfortunately for
her supporters, thc winning post is a fix:
ture, -and Moonyoon was the first to reach'
it. There was very little mopey for Ravel,
hut he gained third Place, fiylvaniumand
Renouncement were prominent in tiie early
stages of tho race, but took no part in the
finish- The winner's time for tue two miles
was 4ttiin. p. 2-Ssec.,'the heavy going ob-
viating any 'possibility of records being es- :
teblisbed during the afternoon. Redstring-;
took 2min. 27 2-5scc to run a milo ana i

other events being as follow :-First-Class I

land she won the Punchestown Grand Plate

the Welter Plate at The Curragh. Hogapeaa

in England, and as a three-year-old was
aent to Germany, when» he raced until 18
years of age. Downey's dam waa a half
sister to tao dani of Carbine, and a close
relation to the dam of Simmer
Few horses can claim the same record
AS Ittitox, which graduated in jumpers'
fiat oompany, and is now capable of win-
ning first-class plates- Jeffrey's gelding
usually wins his races from behind the field,
but on Saturday he was always in the
front division, and the issue never ap-
peared to be in doubt. Saturate wa«
given a run ia this race, and although he
failed to secure a place, he showed suffi-
cient pace to indicate that he is sot »
back number. He has not been badly
treated in the Goldfields Newmarket Han-
dicap. J<ew people expected Kilsyth to
run second; but fae is well enough bred to
aspire to honours in big events. He met
Ittitox at an advantage of 221b- Ardol
had tba services of Stephens, and was
backed down to 5 to 2 only to run lae£.
There were no inquiries for JUlawarrai
and he ra» as the betting indicated he
would.
On Tuesday Mr. H. F. Wilkinson de-
clared the weights for the chief event« io
be decided* at the annual meetings of the
Kalgoorlie and Boulder facing Clubs. Mís-
tico has not been thrown into the Han-
nans Handicap, seeine that he will "bo
asked to carry 10.1-the weight carried to
victory by Bivalve thirteen years .ago. Be
.fore and since 1903 the Hannans has not,
been won.fay a horse carrying over 812,
and this fact is worth remembering in con-
nection with-this year's event. Lord Flft
viis has been "given 9.9, or 51b. more than
the impost allotted Dakai- Both these
equines are considered to be superior to
Ireland aud" Minever : but ,Saturate, if .him-
self on the day, should hold several of
the top-wejghts safe. He is well treated
with 8.5. Cocatea <8.6) may be seen to bet-
ter advantage in the Kalgoorlie Cup in
- which he will be asked t© carry 63. Itlitox
may be expected U> run well with B.5. He
Ass not been entered for the other iniport
; ant races. To my mind thf pick of thc
handicap is Devil's' March, which should,
find 7-2 a iujeury. The winner will prob-
ably come frojn the following:
Dakai Karly ^Morn
Ireland Deva's March
Saturate Vinalia
King's Wedding Gentle Mary
.'While I doubt Mislico's ability ,io carry
over 10.0 to victory in thc Hannans, neither
am I enamoured of his chanoes of' catching
the judge'e eye in the Kalgoorlie Cup,
under 9.12- I much*prefer Minever (8.11)
which has a number of good performances
to his credit. La George (8.5) will be asked
to concede his stable-mate, Irish Knùjbt,
21b., and it will be interesting to see which
of the pair is most fancied by the stable,
<¡r, it " may be that Mr. Bolger will start
both of them. Bedstring (7.9) may not be
quite brilliant enough io win a big race;
j but Embroglio (7.8) must have a great
chance of annexing thc stake. He is well.
I A few that I like, at present are:
Dakai Glad Bye
Minever " ' Cocatea
La George ' JSmlbroglio
Irish. Knight Devil'« March
Of course, the running at Kalgoorlie will
have a great effect upon the chances of
the candidates" for tne~Gold{ields Newmar-
ket Handicap and Boulder Cup, In the
six 'furlongs event horses which appear
likely to run well are:
Dakai . Highgate
Ireland Devil's March
Kwasiud . Vinalia '_
Saturate Jillawarra.
'The best-handicapped horse in the Boulder
Cup, in my opinion, is Bewolf, which should
. be very hard to beat,, seeing, that he is
j sud» a good stayer with only 7.1 on . bis*
back. The event may be well left for fut
I ure consideration, but 1 feel confident that
the winner will be found among the follow-
ing:
La George Embroglio
IriBh Knight United Service
Cocatea Tardy
Bewolf Devils March
"Chiron," tu the "Australasian," writes:
J'When Bobadil retired from the turf he
went ïo the Coolart stud; but when that
establishment was dispersed he was pur-
chased by Mr. ^. .Wilson, jun. He stood
at Bonnyvalft for a few seasons, »nd was
theil BOM. . to Mr. Tom Uphill for 2,300
guineas, and .remained, at Pranjip Park
until July last year. Pranjip "Park stud
was broken up, and Bobadil* changed hands
once agaiii, and, this year he is located
at Blackwood Fark. near Ferntree Gully.
Wherever Bobadil has been lie was a suc-
cess, and.he should.be good for, quito a
nuciber of years. . There i$ no need to J
dwell «pon bis consistency as a sire, as
that point whs stressed in this column last
week. He never had the good fortune
to gel into one of the big and fashion-
able studs, consequently- his success as a
stallion, is all thc more «triking. He was
abeu? -the best horse Bill of Portland -sired
in Australia, and wc have not had many»
if any. better in Australia during the
past 20 years. - He was possessed of great
brilliance and could stay almost any dis-
tancé. ' In fact, lie is the type of horse
ono would expect to make a mark at the
stud. It. is 'really remarkable how the
Bobadils last. They are wiry, come again
customers, who stand any amount of -hard
work and racing. It is not until one be-
gins to analyse the list of'winners sired
l>y Bobadil that one realises to. what, ex-
tent he has succeeded. I suppose the best
horses sired by him are Pendil, The Pari-
sian, Blague, and Burrabadeen; but Bob-
adil H. (who is at 'the-stud in England),
Kuban, Miss Bobby. Bobby, The Lintia, ,
Boyal Alice, Flaith Pinkerton, "Danaus,
Karaattan, Gouge d'Eelire and Kooringa
were a pretty useful lot, and ¿he bst
could he considerahly lengthened. Among
the horses -named are the wilmer» cf the
Melbourne Cup- Australian Cup, 2iewmar
ket Handicap, Goodwood, Handicap, Caul-
field Gintpas, Adelaide'.Oap. ana ^Stan-
dish' Handicap. Of the sons of BUj of
Portland wfch have been at the- >tun in
Australia. Maltster ls'Hie jovlv one with a,
greater list of successes to hie credit, and
lt rmj*t be borne in mimi that Maltster
has han a, much wider scope than Bobadil.
As far . as breeding goes. Bobadil cannot.
he faulted. He possesses Ute fashionabl
St. 6usoa-Musket croas, " and be come
from a great sire family, his granddad
being a balf-eister to Hermit, one of Ui
greatest &tallians of ¿he last oenturj
Bobadil is by Bill of Portland (son e
St. Simou) from She, by Nordenfeldt (soi
of Musket) from Steppe (imp.), by Saun
terer (son of Birdcatcher) from Sedusioi
(dam of Hermit), by Tadmor. Breeder
should bear in jnind that Bobadil marc
are doing well as matronB and one *'
'them, The Infanta, bred the Derby win
uer "Walawa.
j Notwithstanding the cold night, 1,80
persons gathered to witness the sport prc
j vided by the West Australian Trotting As
"societies on Saturday. Backers commence*
badly by making Farcy Work favourite fo
the Fifth Division. This resulted in a luck;
win for Nelly, which paid a dividend of £<
3s. Irishman led into the straight, bu!
broke near the post, and had to be conten!
with second place. Third position was fillet
by Dolly W., whose supporters collected £1
2s. for Ss. Tippo, which has won several
races during the past few months, ecorei
au easy victory in the Second Division- Hu
nearest opponents as the line was crossed
were Wally M. and Desire.. Osterley X.(
was successful in the Fourth Division. Ste!
larine led for a .Isp, but Osterley K., thea
assumed command, and be defeated Jem by
a couple of lengths. Fancy Ribbon was sin
lengths.away third. The winner paid a
dividend of £6 li.-a shilling more thai
¿he amount ho returned his Supporte«
on a previous occasion. T- Foy has a good
performer ia Honest Tom. The gelding
was again successful on Saturday evening.
From 115 Tards behind he defeated John
Redmond (70 yards behind), Huonette and
eeven others in the principal event. Hon-
est Tom was well backed, and registered a
£.27£ gait. Zillah Hook was most fancied
for the Third Division, but was defeated by
Rusty. Era accounted for the other com-
petitors. Riddett rode his mare, Rose Huon,
first past the post inthe final event. Wel-
come Bells (12 lengths away) was second
and Woodlark third. Plain Bobbie fell
end Toddler- came down over him in the
second last lap. but luckily, nobody was in-
jured- The W-A.T.A. will hold another
