LIEUTENANT EVERNDEN.
The following letter, to which an answer is sub-
joined, is expressive of the sentiments of the principal
residents at Bathurst, and denotes their high opinion of
the services which Lieutenant Everden and his party
of mounted police have rendered to that neighbour-
hood. We willingly give insertion both to the letter
and reply ; as they shew not only that there was merit
in the measure adopted for the suppression of bush-
ranging, but also that the execution of the duty was
entrusted to such as have fulfilled the intention of the
Government, and the hopes of the public :---
To Lieutenant Thomas Evernden, 3rd Regiment or
Buffs, commanding the Bathurst party of mounted
police.
BATHURST, AUG. 17, 1826.
SIR,— It is with feelings of no ordinary satisfaction that
we, the undersigned, landholders and stock proprietors
residing in the district of Bathurst, beg to offer you our con-
gratulations on the success which has attended your zealous
exertions in restoring tranquillity throughout this district,
by the late capture of two daring gangs of armed and
mounted bushrangers.
Sensible as we are of the many and important advantages
that we have derived from the party of mounted police in
this district, we cannot but feel grateful to Government for
its establishment — but our feelings of gratitude are consider-
ably enhanced, by your having been appointed to the com-
mand of it ; for it is to your zeal and unwearied exertions,
in directing the energies of your corps, that we consider
ourselves indebted for the suppression of bushranging in
this district.
We have with pleasure observed the commendation be-
stowed upon you and your party by Government. We,
who have witnessed your zeal and activity feel a satisfaction
in finding them thus reasonably noticed.
Requesting your acceptance of our sincere thanks, for
the important services you have rendered us, and with the
hope that you may long continue to reside amongst us,
We remain, Sir,
Your most obedient humble servants,
Signed by the Magistrates, the Landholders, and Stock
Proprietors, of Bathurst.
