TIHE NEW TAXES IN ROME.
Rome, Oct. 10.-Home. as well as
foreign produce, shares in the newly in
flicted tax, andO illcreaso of the tax on real
property lovied for the last few years, but
wlhichh tal nd d house proprietors hoped
would cease after the firtt emergencies of
thle estored governmenlt, lt now rendered a
permanent adjunct.
British commlerco in this part of the
woild will undergo a sensible dimunition
on account o01 these doubled import and
octroi duties, which will, of course, diminish
the demand for British and coloioal produce.
The princllcipal articles supplied by British
ldllstLry, now rendered so much more ex
pellsive to tile tomalln consumleler, are cotton
goods, cutlery, iron, and all other metal
goods, fiacy goods, salt fish (especially
Newfoundlind salmon), coffee, ten, and
salgitr, which have hitherto fbrmed impor
tant itemsll in our lists of exports to Ittly,
with the exception of sugar, which of late
has fallen off very much on Uccoullt of the
ulore advantageous terms obtained from
Dutch dealers ill that article.
The duty oil tea, of which, fortunately
for them, tile ttolnians consume but little,
will be above tenlpence a pound, comprising
the import and octroi. The tItter duty
will be extended to all the free ports of
the state, which have hitherto enjoyed Im
munity from it.
Frialce will filld her customers hero
grulmble at hliving to pay double duty for
their champagne and Bordeaux, but they
will be perhalps consoled by the thought
that their honme-grown wines are now sub
jected to an octriO duty as well. The
Cardlnal's edict, however, considerately
decIcres that in consequence of tile disas
trous failure of the winle crops throughout
tile state-which would brinlg the tax on
hIme grown wines and spirits to a mere
trifle--he will content himself with a sum
of 850,000 scudi instead, to be 'paid next
year ill due proportions by the 'various
COIlmiuies of tile state.
Sugar refined in tile state is to pay as
much as that Imported. The export duties,
which the government has thought ad
visable to raise in a similar ratio, tre those
oil raw hemip and tallow. The exportation
of cream: of teartr is prohlbited until the end
