Flying Boat
Quarantined
Cholera Suspect
A Passenger
DARWIN October 28.
Twenty-two passengers and
the eight members of the crew
of a Qantas Empire Airways
flying boat, which arrived here
tonight from Singapore, have
been quarantined. This action has
been taken as a precaution against
a possible outbreak of cholera.
The full application of the Qua
rantine Act was imposed by the
Chief Quarantine Officer of the
Northern Territory when it was
reported that a passenger, suspec
ted of having cholera, was aboard
the flying boat.
The cholera suspect is an elderly
Englishman who boarded the flying
boat in Palestine after bavins been
in Cairo for several days. He was
carried off the flying boat on a
stretcher, and was immediately 'ad
mitted to a special quarantine ward
at the Darwin General Hospital. He
is suffering from a severe attack of
diarrhoea, which is a likely symp
tom.
Strict Precautions
All the passengers and the crew
and any contacts, including the
Qantas staff personally engaged on
work bringing them in contact
with the flying boat were trans
ferred to the quarantine ward in a
special bus.
The flying boat, which is moored
at toe usual buoy at the base, has
also been placed in quarantine and
is likely to be moved to the other
side of the harbor tomorrow. It
has been fumigated and will re
main in quarantine far five days.
The medical test for cholera will
take three days, but the passengers
and the crew and contacts, will be
held in quarantine (or at least five
days.

All mail and freight aboard the
flying boat has been quarantined
and will be held, until cleared.
When the boat landed and com
municated to the shore that a pas
senger was sick, a doctor was taken
aboard and after a strict and care
ful check placed the plane in quar
antine.
It is understood that the suspect
was inoculated against cholera
early this month and again on Oc
tober 18.
It is believed to Be the first time
that quarantine has been necessary
in Darwin. .
