STORY BEHIND
U.S. SPY SCARE
Activities Of Nazi
Leader
The indictment of 18 men, several Of
them German officials and others Ger- <*>
man-Americans, on apparently espion- <*>
age charges, has caused a profound sen-
sation in the United States. One of j
the strangest stories is that of Dr. Ignatel
Griebl. medico, officer in the UJS. Army,
and artillery officer in the German
Army during the world war. He es
caped to Germany from America with
the assistance of the captain of a Ger
man liner when the spy investigation
began a few weeks ago. A striking ac
count of his activities in the United
States, an attempt to expel him from
the US. Army, and his forced resigna
tion from the staff of a New
York Hospital, is told in this week's
issue of "The Express and Journal.**
which will be on sale today. Toe story
provides a vivid background for the
cabled news of the Grand Jury indict
ment during the past week.
Another interesting story in "The Ex
press and Journal,'' entitled "How Many
Words do You Know?" gives surprising
details of the meagre extent of the ave
rage vocabulary compared with the
range of some half a million words avail
able in the English language. University
graduates, for instance, know only about
20.000 on average, and a survey of the
average voter in the United States
showed a vocabulary of only 4,000. How
these figures are arrived at is one of
the several interesting features of the
article.
Stories of English peers selling their
ancestral homes owing to the oppressive
burden of taxation has given many the
belief that, taken as a whole, they are
comparatively an impoverished lot. This
can hardly be said to be the case, par
ticularly in the case of the Marquis of
Bute, who is the central figure ut, an
other article published in 'The Express
and Journal." It is entitled "What
£60.000,000 Can Do," and details the his
tory and extent of the huge Bute for
tune and the uses to which the present
holder of the title has put the resultant
income.
?"Surrealiste," the new and refresh
ingly frank social writer, describes a
number of recent social events and com
ments on the personalities present, while
in tbe sporting section of the paper score
sheets for the use of readers who will be
listening to the Test broadcast begin
| ning tonight, will be published.
