POTATOES AT £1120 A TON.
Potatoes do not usually occur to the
speculator as a basis of operation, but
the history of the variety known as
the "Northern Star" is, according to
"Country Life," one of the romances of
finance. It was brought out last year
by a grower at. Markinch, in Flfestlire,
wifo parted with a few tons at the extra.
ordinary price of £1120 a ton. To this
rate, which works cut at about 10s a
pound, he religiously adhered. At this
rate two pounds were purchaEed by a
firm of. dealers belonging to Bardney,
near Lincoln. Fran these two pounds
they have this year grown 130hb., and
are so pleased with the result that they
have bought a quantty more at the rate
of £500 a ton. After this, the story
of the King iidwars VII. putato, which
began to sell at £12 10s a ton, and rose
*to £40, seems quite tame.
