Divided Opinions
NARACOORTE August 19.
Opinions are divided at Naracoorte
regarding the proposal.
Mr. C. J. D. Smith, pastoralist, near
Kingston, is in favor of the proposal
from a national point of view. He said
that the proposed road would pass
through a most desirable tract of
country for development.
Other leading residents of Nara
coorte, including the mayor (Mr. N. V.
Wallace) and Mr. A. C. DeGaris, a
former mayor, consider that the pur
pose would be more effectively and
cheaply achieved and the road
shortened, by either bringing a road
through from Kingston to Naracoorte
on the practically completed present
road along the railway line, or through
from Reedy Creek, Conmurra, and
Woodleigh to the existing main road
from Robe to Naracoorte. Either of
these routes would necessitate the con
struction of less than 20 miles of new
road, and would meet the existing good
road to Mount Gambier through
Penola. The country to be served by
the suggested road through Comung
and Konetta could be best served by
feeder roads to the existing south
eastern railway system, which would
help to strengthen the railway position.
