PRINCE'S HIGHWAY
DEVIATION
Divided Views On Proposal
In South-East
"WOULD WE ROBE OFF
MAP"
The decision of the Government to
refer to the Public Works Committee
the question of deviating Prince's High-<*>
way by constructing a new read from
Kinpsion to Miliicent. shortening the
diitaiiee between Adelaide and M*'l
oourne by 20 miles, has been received
w.th mixed feelings in the South-East
and by others interested. While in
dignation at the proposal was expressed
at a public meet-lna at Robe last night,
the chairman of the District Council
(Councillor S. Fletcher) declaring that
Rcbc- might just as well be wiped off
Uie map. Alderman C. L. Spelu* of
Mount Gambier. said he regarded "the
now road as a matter of national im
portance.
Tlie proposed road through Reedy
Creok. Comung. Konetta, and Hathci
leigh to Furner will Isolate Robe and
Beachport from the tourist traffic,
which at present calls there on the way
to Melbourne and Mount Gambier. On
the other hand, it will pass through
some of the richest country in the
South-East which has not Vet been
developed to any great extent. Land
holders claim that it is useless to pro
ceed with development without some
suitable means of communication, pre
ferably a railway, but they admit that
a bitumen roadway allowing of fast
road transport would increase its value
tremendously.
An argument in favor of the -jresent
route, which is the old conch road, is
that it passes through som? of the
prettiest lake scenery in the South
East, skirting Lakes Eliza. St. Clair, and
George, and the small lakes between
Robe and Beachport. Tlie road is high
and dry. whereas that proposed through
the black flat country, it is claimed,
will have to be raised to prevent it being
| inundated during a wet winter. The
new route would be about 20 mile by
the nearest road to either Robe or
Beachport.
"Unfair To Robe Tradespeople"
"The scheme, if adepted. will be very
unfair to the Robe tradespeople." paid
Mr. A. G. Bone, manager of Bond's
M.T.T.A. "The town has always been
looked upon as a popular pleasure i*c
sort, but if the new road is Jaid. the
town will be cut out altogether. It
will not affect Beachport to any extent,
for that town is not nearly r.s popular
as Robe." Mr. Bond suggested that
tlie road from Kin-zstoii should be con
tinued to Robe, and then a deviation
made along the back road to Nara
coorte. to meet the proposed road at
Konetta. This could be continued to
Millicent through Hatherleigh. This
road would still save at least 12 miles.
Mr. W. H. Morton, the president of
the Commercial Travellers" Club, said
that the new road certainly would make
things easier for commercial travellers.,
and save much time. The present
road was in a deplorable state of dis
repair, and the new road would be a
boon to travellers.
