FAVOURITE; PASCH, THIRD

The Derby was run at Epsom to
day ond resulted in a win for the
outsider Bois Roussel.
Despite the gloomy weather an
enormous crowd cheered the Royal
party on arrival. The Queen wore
a suit of powder blue and a hat of
the same shade. Furs were favoured
among the women, but many dared
the weather in gay frocks.
The going was better than ex
pected, despite the heavy rains.
The result was :

His Majesty's colt Licence was the
early leader, but at the foot of the
hill Halcyon Gift dashed to the lead,
steadily increasing it to the seven
furlongs. Pasch was going comfor
tably in fourth place at the top of
the bend where Halcyon Gift was
out two lengths from Chatsworth,
Pasch and Scottish Union. At the
six furlongs Halcyon. Gift .was four
lengths ahead but this lead was re
duced to two lengths at Tattenham
corner, where Caveman and Mirza
were coming up rapidly. Scottish
Union led into the straight from
Pasch (challenging) . and Scottish
Union. It looked a .certainty for
Scottish Union until Bois Roussel
came with an overwhelming run out
of the pack and went away to win
by four lengths, with two lengths
to Pasch, third.
Special police patrols .watched the
roads in the vicinity of the course
all night after the renewal of
gipsies' threat to drive their slow
moviwr, caravans into the Derby
traffic and paralyse the traffic
as a protest. If they were
moved on from their camping site
nearby. The ban on gipsies camp
ing on the downs was rigorously en
forced.
Thousands saw the race by tele
vision for the first time. Five
hundred London shops invited
audiences to special demonstra
tions. The transmission began with
the arrival of the crowds. Three
cameras were installed to cover the
race throughout.
