times.
Crawford was in no wise perturbed
while Timmer. thanks to great retriev
ing activity, ran away with the first
set. Tlie Australian seemed to be
merely getting his eye in and finding
a length. For the rest of the match
he had a comfortable mastery, by
means chiefly of his great driving, ad
mirable placirg, and splendid half
volleys. He went in to volley rarely,
but varied driving attacks with a cut.
His backhand was most effective.
Crawford and Hopman won the
doubles decisively. Crawford and his
wife looked to be certain winners in
the last set of the mixed doubles. They
pulled up from 2—5 to 6—5, and then
Crawford threw the lead away. losing
the next game to love on his own ser
vice.
In the semi-finals of the singles
Crawford, in defeating Satoh, showed
his best form. The match bristled
