-15 firemen, have been injured, many
of them seriously. The Ftae Chief
Mr. Baoul Gauthier. and four firemen
were among the killed, while leading
the search for the dead.
Apparently the explosions trene
caused by a red hot rivet used by
workmen of Canadian Vickers Limited,
operators of tae dry dock in which
the Cymbeline was being repaired.
One of the fuel tanks exploded when
nearly a hundred men were working in
and about the vessel in addition to
toe crew of 30. who were ?=Wthpe in
the forepart of the vessel.
An hour later, while firemen were
pouring water into the fierce biaze. a
second and worse blast occursd ? This
caused the death of Gauthier and
other firemen.
The Cymbeline had been used for
carrying petrol from Port Arthur. Texas,
and the tanks were empty, but. per
haps, they contained expliosKe gases.
There was a substantial quantity of
ofl in the fuel tanks. The ftast ex
plosion ripped tie forward part vide
open, and a majority of the crew,
many with their clothes burning were
thrown into the water, where they
were rescued.
The explosions entirely wrecked the
dry dock, which has been blown apart,
one section floating away. The firs%
explosion was. in fact two detonations
close together. Between1 them and
the second were a number of analler
