RAILWAY MISHAP

RACE TRAIN HELD PP '
BEVERLEY MEETING
POSTPONED
Perth, Jan. 1G.
When a heavily laden good train
was travelling on the Great
Southern line in the vicinity of
I3ury Siding, 'li miles from Perth,
about 2 o'.glock this morning it foul
ed the points near the siding, with
the result that the engine, tender
and five trucks left the line, ripping
the rails from the sleepers and
badly damaging the points. Neither
the engine nor the trucks toppled
over, nor was anybody injured, but
the permanent way was so badly
damaged that traffic was held up for
many hours. Passengers on trains
going and coming from Perth
changed trains when they arrived at
the scene of the derailment and the
trains then proceeded back to
their destinations,
The race train carrying horses and
public for the ll'verley race meet
ing which left 7erth about 7.30
a.m., was held up at the scene of
the derailment. Although a break
down gang was early on the scene,
the big crane to deal with the engine
and tender did not arrive from Perth
until 1 p.m., and it was 4 o'clock be
fore the rails were replaced and
traffic could be resumed. Before
this time, however, the race train
had returned to Perth and the
Beverly -elub decided to abandon
the meeting.
