BIG SYDNEY FIRE
FACTORY AND SHOP GUTTEDA
£100,000 DAMAGE.
Sydney, Oct. 28.
The furniture factory of O. IK.
'Elhott in the Crescent Annandale
was completely destroyed by fire
this morning.
Adjacent premises occupied by,
Messrs. Turner and Loveridge,
builders, and Messrs. Thomson and
Co., were damaged. A terrace of
residentials opposite were badly
damaged, while a shop at the in,
tersection of the Crescent and T''ra,
falgar-street was gutted.
During the progres sof the fire,
Fireman Conway and Deputy Ch:ef'
Officer Nance, who was directing
operation, came in contact with
a live wire and were badly burned.
They were taken to the Balinain
district hospital where they were
both admitted.
The outbreak occurred shortly
after ten o'clock and when detach
ments of firemen froni headqua.rters
George - street, West Stanmore,
Balmain, Newton, R.ed'ern Annan-'
dale, Leichardt and Glebe arrived,
the building was well alight. A
strong northerly wind swept my=
riads of sparks across the road to
the premises opposite which soon
became ignited. The occupants were
obliged to hurriedly leave their
homes, the contents of which were
in most cases destroyed. The fare
tory was of two floors and had a
frontage of five hundred feet by one
hundred and fifty feet.
Toward the conclusion the fired
men were hampered by an inaded
quate water supply. Four hours
after the outbreak was reported?
dense columns of smoke were issu
ing from the blazing mass. The
overhead wires in front of the
building weire torn from their poles
and in consequence all trams bound
for Balmain and Rozelle. -travelled
via Pyrmont.
At an early stage the adjoining
pre.mises caught alight, but Ihe fire
men succeeded in extinguishing the
flames before extensive damage was
done.
The total damage caused by the
fire it is estimated . will exceed
£100,000. The furniture factory,
it is understood, was plartly cover,
ed by insurance.

yesterday on his annual visit of in,
spection of the Eastern Goldfields
High School.

The passengers listed to take their
departure for the eastern States by
the trans-Australian train yesterday

Mr.' Charlie Moran, who renewed
his acquaintance with the goldfields
during the week, was not only the
first member for the goldfields in
the State Parliament, but was also
actively associated wih mining in
the early nineties. As part owner
of the I?vanhoe Venture he had some
lively experances -during the so
called riots. ' Mr. Moran, who is
now farming in, the Wagin distriot,
recently canvassed the State in con
nection'with the establishment of
woollen mills at Albany.
