WIRELESS COMPANY'S AFFAIRS
Effect of Competition.
LONDON, May 25.— Presidium at the
anuilal meeting' of Cables and Wireless,
Limited, the governing director (Mr. J.
P. Rpnist-n-Pf-nrlf-r^ sairl r.Vinr. tllf- ('fun-
pauy's expenditure had been reduced by
nearly £1.030.000 a year. He had made
constant representations to the Govern
ment with a view to securing reconsidera
tion of certain elements of agreements
made iu 1029, including beam wireless ren
tal ot £250.000 per annum, which the
company had continued to pay duiinx the
period of the depression.
He hud also asked for a re-exuniination
of the' whole question of external tele
phony from Britain, which was likely to
become a competitor of external tele
graphy. In that respect, the rationalisa
tion of external services sought by the
Imperial Wireless and Cable Conference
was incomplete, and the time had come
when rationalisation should be com
pleted by handing all the external tele
graphic and telephonic services to this
company. _ Another form of competition
was the air mail services, which were
fostered by Government subsidies.
He had constantly urged consideration
of these matters on the Government, but
he regretted to say that the Government
was unable to see its way either to modify
the terms, whether financial or other
wise, of the charter under which the com
pany worked, or to examine the develop
ments in communications which the march
of time had brought about within the
last four years.
