INDUSTRIAL UNITY.
Mm by the A.CXU.
MELBOURNE, Feb. 3.— At the jubilee
conference of the Australian Workers'
Union today, addresses were, given by
Mr. A.E. Monk (president) and Mr. C.
Crofts (secretary) of the Australian
Council of Trade Unions on the need for
closer unity between the two organisa
tions.
Mr. Monk said that unity could be
achieved by the affiliation of the A.W.U.
with the council. Such a step was of
vital importance to the whole of the in
dustrial movement. The A.CT.U. had not
been able to operate with full efficiency
because some of the large unions were
not affiliated with it. it would be
strengthened by the joining up of the
A.W.U. *
Mr. Crofts urged co-operative action
among the unions of Australia. There
was a section in the union movement he
said, that believed that by a continuous
struggle, strikes, etc., they could bring
about a chaotic state of things which
would culminate In the overthrow of the
capitalist system. The A.C.T.U. also
wanted to get away from capitalism, but
It aimed at doing this by constitutional
methods and actions. By becoming part
of the A.C.T.U.. the A.W.U. could mate
rially improve the position.
The matter of affiliation was referred
to the executive council of the A.W.U.
