PROVISION OF ARMED GUARDS.
Premier Promises an Inquiry.
CANBERRA. Feb. -3.— The Premier of
Victoria (Mr. Dunstan), who is visiting
Canberra for the meeting of the Austra
lian T-nnn rVmnr.il. said tOtlaV that he
would order an inquiry immediately into
the question of providing armed guards
for State officers carrying large sums of
money. He added that his attention had
not yet been directed officially to the re
ported statements by Mrs. J. Scriven,
widow of James Edward Scriven. Mrs.
Scriven criticised the lack of an effective
escort to guard the transfer of large sums
of money.
Mr. Dunstan said that the occurrence
was most regrettable and that no time
would be lost in considering the provision
of armed guards to act as escorts while
money was being transferred from Gov
ernment Departments.
