THIEVES DISTURBED.
Attempt to Burn Stock Fails.
MELBOURNE, Aug. 1.— Thieves dis
turbed in their efforts to remove a quan
tity of stock from the Dominion knitting
mills at Brunswick East early today at

rained at more than £7,000. Several
foils of silk were saturated with kerosene.
Police believe that the thieves set fire
:o the stock hoping to destroy -evidence of
the robbery, but thev were disturbed be
fore they could carry away silk which they
bad selected for removal, valued at about
£60. Nearly a dozen rolls of material
nrere found by employees today in a truck
near a window through which the thieves
rained entry. Fires had been lit in three
places in the fetoreroom, but luckily all'\
'??ent out witli only slight damage to stock.
Employees of the firm were working in
idjoining premises on both sides of the
storeroom when the intruders forced their
svay in. but did not see them either enter
jr leave the factory.
