CABINET REMAINS UNCHANGED
Ministerial Reconciliation.
PARIS, July 24.— The Cabinet, after a
two-hour conference today, achieved a solu
tion of the crisis arising from the violent
recriminations of M. Tardieu and M.
Uhautemps at the Stavisky fraud inquiry
on July 19. The Ministry will remain un
changed.
Both M. Tardieu and M. Chautemps are
former Premiers, and in the present Dou
mergue Government of 'political truce
and appeasement,' M. Tardieu is a Min
ister, without portfolio. At the Stavisky
inquiry, M. Chautemps stated that M.
Tardieu, when Prime Minuter, was cog
nisant of Stavisky's fraudulent operations,
and M. Tardieu heatedly replied. ?
At today's Cabinet meeting the Prime
Minister (M. . Doumergue) refused to ac
cept M. Tardieu'e resignation, and the
Radical Ministers (including M. Herriot)
decided to remain in office, though their
position will be considered when the Radi
cal Congress meets in October.
M. Doumergue, in addressing the Min
isters, said that he regretted that the'
vehement ardour with which M. Tardieu
had defended himself had l%d him to ex
cesses, but he did not think that he de
liberately intended to endanger the Min
istry, fie pointed out that the only, two
courses were an unchanged Cabinet or an
entirely new Ministry, which he refused
to form. He added that the presence of
M. Tardieu and M. Herriot in the Cabi
net was a symbol of support given the
'Ministry of Truce.' which was essential
for public confidence.
It is now believed that the Cabinet
is safe until the autumn, enabling pur
suance of the task of national restoration.
It is reported that after the Radical
Ministers decided to remain in the Cabi
net, M. Doumergue, strongly moved,
clasped M. Herriot to his breast and then
embraced M. Tardieu.
