ROWING.
Swan Club's Jnbilee Dinner.
The Swan River Bowing Club's
eleventh annual dinner, which was held
at Anzac House on Saturday evening,
afforded Dast and cresent members an
other opportunity of celebrating the
club's fiftieth birthday and also the win
ning of the championship pennant. There
was an attendance of over 100, including
several whose membership dates back to
the foundation years. The production of
the souvenir menu cards reflected great
credit on the organisers and in this
regard particular mention must be made
of an inset which was compiled by Mr.
J. H. Abrahams. Reference was made
in it to many interesting details of the
club's history from Its humble beginning
in a small shed with one boat to today's
commodious clubhouse housing a fleet
capable of boating at the same time
every member on the active list.
The president (Mr. A. H. Macartney)
was in the chair and he was supported by
the patron (Sir J. Talbot Hobbs) and the
captain (Mr. E. Bishop). Among the
guests were Mr. R. S. Jeffreys, president
of the Australian Rowing Council; Mr.
M. Miller, vice-president, and Mr. J. A.
Child, the honorary secretary of the
association. Apologies were received from
Mr. F. E. Shaw, president of the W.A.
Rowing Association, who was suddenly
called away from town, and Mr. C.
CDonnell, who was prevented by illness
from being present. A much appreciated
compliment was the receipt of a congratu
latory telegram from the A.N.A. dub.
As a further commemoration of the
jubilee year certificates of life member
ship were presented to those members
who have received this honour. The
chairman presented his certificate to Sir
Talbot Hobbs, who then in turn presented
them to Messrs. A. H. Macartney, E. L.
Neville, R. D. Scott, G. Hyde, C. Brady,
C. Trenaman, R. Love, J. A. Child, J.
Abrahams, W. J. Kirkby, J. W. Lang and
C. H. Evans. Certificates will be for
warded to those life members who were
not present at the dinner.
The toast of the club was proposed by
Sir Talbot Hobbs who, after congratulat
ing the active members upon their win
ning of the pennant with the champion
eights and the champion maiden eights,
spoke in a reminiscent vein of the early
days of the club. His remarks were sup
ported by Mr. Abrahams, while the re
sponses were made by the president and
captain.
Other toasts honoured were The As
sociation, The Old Brigade and The
Ladies.
Just prior to the conclusion of the pro
ceedings, Sir Talbot Hobbs asked those
present to drink the health of the chair
man (Mr. A. H. Macartney), stressing
how fortunate the Swan Club was in hav
ing such an able and active leader. The
toast was received with resounding
'dozens.'
A musical programme rendered by
Messrs. J. Stephens, Campbell-Egan, W.
Savage and J.. Taylor added to the even
ing's enjoyment.
