'WALKABOUT.'
Englishmen first landed on Australian
soil to 1622, 313 years ago. They were
Thomas Bright, the mate, and nine sea
men of the ship Tryal. wrecked off the
coast of Western Australia. Such is one
of the 'Stranger Than Fiction' facts sup-
plied by Thomas Dunbabin to the Novem-
ber issue of the Australian magazine
'Walkabout.' Reference is also made to
the fact that the name Australia was first
used in 1582, to L. V. Popelliniere's 'Les
Trois Mondes,' published to Paris; and
also to Dampier's statement that he found
the head of a hippopotamus in a shark
caught to Shark Bay.
'Tribal Wars in Unexplored New
Guinea' are dealt with in an article by
M. J. Leahy, who with his brother Dan
helped to open up that country's jungle
goldfields. Of special interest during Cup
Week is an article by A. B. Haines deal-
ing with the breeding of thoroughbreds in
Australia. Another topical article tells of
the joys of surfing and the work of life
saving clubs. Ernestine Hill writes on her
voyage from Fremantle to the North-West
in the Silver Gull last year, and further
subjects discussed and appropriately il-
lustrated include 'Murray Memories,'
'New Caledonia,' 'Fossicking Days,' and
'Joseph Conrad's Barque.'
