ROYAL FREMANTLE.
K. Pix Dethrones P. G. Bennett.
The 17-year-old Keith Pix took an
other step up the ladder which one day
will most probably lead to a State ama
teur title when vesterdav he deff-«.t--H P
G. Bennett, defending champion and four
times winner, for the title of the Royal
Fremantle Club. The margin was 3 and 1
and the going was hard from the first
hole to the 35th. Brassey shots that
averaged nearly 250 yards on their down
ward journeys and bored well past the
200-yard pegs upwind: long raking iron
shots to far greens, and a great flair for
quickly forsaking trouble when those long
shots strayed a little, were the main
factors of the new champion's win.
The way was seldom smooth. At the
ninth Bennett was as confident as any
man has the right to be when he is
three up against an opponent whose
chances were considered ah even-money
bet. Bennett had been a little unkind.
On more than a few occasions a long
putt or a sudden arrival near the pin
from a bad lie had upset Pix's calcula
tions and being highly strung his game
was the mirror of his mind instead of
being its servant.
A winnine putt from 12ft. at the 10th
heartened Pix and later a two at the
16th gave him a chance of not only
catching Bennett, but leading him at the
adjournment Pix. who drove almost vo
the bunkers at the 17th, failed with
approach and unbarred the green to Ben
nett, whose usually immaculate drive

failed and left a bad lie for a brassey
second. At the 18th Bennett's brassey
failed, but a glorious iron shot ran we)]
and truly on to the green. Two great;
hits by Pix carried him to the lOtb
tee. Each was about five feet from the
pin in four. The referee (D. G. Taylor)
motioned to Pix, who sank the putt.
That squared the match, Bennett just
missing.
The third nine saw both players duel
ling evenly and in good figures. Pix was
one up at the 26th and Bennett equalised
at the 27th with a magnificent 30ft.
putt. At the 28th — a hard 'one-shotter'
into the wind — Pix finished 12ft. from
the hole and won with a three. At the
30th he went two up and the next four
holes were halved in 3, 5, 4, 3. Dormoy
two, Pix's drive at the 35th (385-yard)
ended just short of the bunker. Beiinprt
was close behind. Bennett's ap
proach just caught the banked edge of
the green and Pix played to within 10
feet and sank the putt for a win and
another championship to add to his coun
try crown.
On the previous day Pix had beaten
Hummerston, 3 and 2, in a semi-final.
In the final of the handicap plate event
Camm beat McCubbing, 7 and 5.
Sixty-four players took part in the
Royal Fremantle medal event on Satur
day. H. Paterson. A. R. Morrison and
C. A. L. Provis ended two down. It was
Paterson's final outing in a club fix
ture. He has been transferred to Sydney
and will leave next Saturday. Roy rax
ton will replace him in the shield match
against Perth on that day.
