SUBIACO CLUB'S DERBY.
The most important race of the season on
the schedule of the Subiaeo Homing Club — th-i
annual Derby — was held on Saturday from Kal
jroorlie— an 'airline distance of 343 miles. Seve
ral regular niers aid not participate, ana eignc
lofts were represented by 05 birds, owned by
the following: — G. Mears, F. Power, K. Men
nett, Oliver, McGovern and Limboume, K. Jolui
Bton. R. Walters and Goodin and Cook.
Mr. II. Broadbent, who acted as liberator,
reported that the birds were released Irom the
Commonwealth Park, Kalgoorlie, in fine weather
and no wind, at 7.30 a.m., but as the rare
progressed the birds encountered the full force
of the north-westerly wind and heavy rain.
Despite this setback the majority of the birds
were clocked in in good time. U. Mean, of
Swanbourne, again repeated his Euccess of last
year. His blue chequer conk was clocked in
iit 20 minutes 21 seconds past four on Saturday,
having completed the journey in 8hrs. .SUiuin.
21 sec. and recorded an average velocity of
1,1. -4 yards |«»r minute. Mr. Mears won tlie
club Derby Cup, K. Johnston's trophy for the
tirst cock bird to time in. a framed photograph
\}f the winning bird and attractive prize money.
F. Power's blue chequer cock gained M'tiond
place with a velocity of 1148.9 yards per minute,
and K. Bennett's blue bar pied hen was a
close third, with an average velocity of 1148.2
yards per 'minute. B. Oliver's blue chequer
hen was fourth with 1146 yards per minute.
Other lofts to time in were: — McGovern and
l.imbourne (1137.2); K. Johnston (1137.05):
R. Walters (1107). Goodin and Cook did not
report.
A race for birds carrying special rings was
conducted in conjunction with the Derby and
was also won by G. Mears. followed by K. ISen
nett. F. Power. Oliver, MrCnvern and Limbourno.
