'The-- Joyous Pilgrimage,' by Ian
Donnelly. Dent and Sons, Ltd., London.
6/. From 'the publishers.
MR. DONNELLY is a young New Zea
land journalist, who. recently spent
a few months in England, and, as
is usual in such . cases, made a
book out ox nis experiences aiter
his return Vdown under.' The
author writes interestingly «.nd con
cisely of the numerous places which he
visited and of the various persons whom
he met during the course of his itinerary
— of how he interviewed writers, poets,
politicians, stars of the variety stage,
Oxford dons and so forth, and was re
fused appointments by other contempor
ary characters, such as Bernard Shaw,
Rudyard Kipling, and Winston Churchill,
on the customary pretexts. Mr. Donnelly
also attended Ranelagh, the Home of
Polo, the Test matches, the Eton and
Harrow social occasion at Lord's, Epsom
on Derby day, Sotheby's salerooms, etc.,
etc. He compares the Australian with
the New Zealand visitor to England, and
criticises the Australian's 'gawky 'I'm
telling you' attitude. .... Some Aus
tralians are inclined to foist their new,
uncertainly deep tones on ears not par
ticularly anxious to hear them. New
Zealanders, on the other hand, are quiet,
rather like country boys come to town,
and trembling to hear brave tales from
the lips of miraculous uncles.'
