OUTBREAK OF BUBONIC PLAGUE
AT NOUMEA.
PASSENGERS AT SYDNEY.
LAX HEALTH INSPECTION.
A SCENE CREATED.
SYDNEY December 26.
In consequence of a cable message having
been received that bubonic plague had
broken out at Noumea, the M.M. Company's
Pacifique, on arrival from Noumea,
was placed in quarantine, but not until the
authorities, owing to gross carelessness,
had allowed a hundred time-expired French
soldiers and a number of passengers from
New Caledonia to go on to Melbourne in
the Australian, en route for Marseilles.
Seven stopped at Sydney, and an endeavour
has been made to trace them. If they are
found they will be kept under supervision
until further information is to hand. All
the vessels arriving from New Caledonia
have to remain in quarantine whether they
have a clean bill of health or not. A
French war vessel has also been quarantined.
TRACING THE PASSENGERS FROM
NOUMEA.
ACTION BY THE HEALTH AUTHORITIES
SYDNEY, December 27.
. To-day out of the seven adults and two
children landed from the Pacifique, a
woman and child were identified in
an isolated dwelling. Their apparel and
surroundings were disinfected under the
direction of the health authorities. The
police are engaged in an endeavour to discover
the whereabouts of the others.
The steamer Maroc arrived at Sydney
recently from New Caledonia, and on the
24th inst. went to Newcastle. Instructions
were telegraphed to Newcastle to-day to
have the vessel placed in quarantine until
the expiration of twelve days from date of
leaving Noumea.'
The French warship Eure and the Pacifique
remain at Sydney under what is
known as quarantine observation. The
next vessel which is expected at Sydney
from New Caledonia is the St. Pierre,
which, according to present arrangements,
will leave Noumea on the 13th inst. She
will be quarantined on her arrival. No
official information has been received from
the representative of the French Government
at New Caledonia that the plague
exists there.
On Monday last the Premier telegraphed
to the British Consul at Noumea as follows
:-" It is reported that plague has
broken out at Caledonia, and that seven
deaths have occurred. Kindly inform me
of the facts." A reply was received as
follows :-" Bubonic plague of a severe
type exists here. No lists of sick or dead
are published, but they are believed to be
numerous. The Premier has advised the
other Governments of the Australian colonies
and New Zealand of the text of the
telegram.
THE AUSTRALIANS AT MELBOURNE.
MELBOURNE, December 27.
The French mail steamer Australien
arrived to-day from Sydney, and was restricted
to the outer anchorage owing to
the presence on board of a number of passengers
from Noumea. These passengers,
who arrived at Sydney from Noumea by
the Pacifique, will be transhipped to the
Australian.
