MR. LA^£;FTJTURE.
FEDERAL ASPIRATIONS.
Search for New State Leader.
SYDNEY, Nov. 17.— Despite earlier de
nials, it is now generally expected in La
bour circles that the Premier of New
South Wales (Mr. Lane) will retire from
btate politics early next year and stand
as a Lang plan candidate at the Federal
election. l%r. Gander, who was endorsed
by the New South Wales Labour Party
as the Lang plan candidate to contest the
Reid seat,' will probably stand down to
enable Mr. Lang to contest the seat.
According to statements 'made to-day
in 'the inner circles' of the State La
bour movement, Mr. Lang recently told
his colleagues that he proposed to retire
from State politics before long.
Already a canvass is being made for
the leadership of the State Labour Party,
and so far only Mr. Baddeley, the Minis
ter for Mines, and Mr. Dunn, the Minis
ter for Agriculture, have been mentioned.
Mr. Baddeley is the present deputy leader,
acting as Premier whenever Mr. Lang is
away. He would be supported by the ex
treme industrialists in any choice of a
new leader, but Mr. Dunn would have the
support of most of the members of the
Caucus.
If Mr. Lang stands for election to the
Federal Parliament, he will direct the cam
paign for the Lang plan candidates in
New South Wales.
