MT. ELIZA HOARDING.
REFUSAL RECOMMENDED.
Land Resumption Proposed:
* t The works committee of the City Coun
cil decided yesterday to recommend again
the refusal of Mr. J. StronachV applica
tion for permission to erect a large sign
Doaraor hoarding on his land ou the sine
of 'Mount Eliza, facing Mount's Bay-road,
and, 'in addition, that the Government be
asked to resume, for road-widening pur
poses, -the whole of the freehold land from
a i-oint about 300ft. west of Jacob's Lad
der to^and including ^.Mr. Stronach's pro
perty, near the farrows.
\When Mr. Stronach was informed last
night, of the committee's decision he said
that he would re-erect, the signboard this
morning; as he had been advised that, he
was, legally entitled to do so. He said
recently that he ,was prepared to remove
the sign in deference to' public opinion,
and did so, but he made a condition that
the council should remove the adjacent
Chinese * garden, '-which has a frontage of
about 600ft. ,' - ?
Trouble, over the signboard began when
it was erected' without' the 'council's per
mission. The owner ignored an order
to pull it down, pending the lodging and
consideration of an application. He made
an . application, which the works commit-,
tee, recommended should be refused, but
the .cotracil reversed thist decision by 11
votes. to 10, after which it decided to re
fer-, the 'matter back to the committee',
thus^ deferring finality until after the
municipal ' elections. The committee in:,
spected the site last week, and reaffirmed
its ^decision yesterday. The council will
consider the recommendation on, Mon
day. , ? '_£ ?
