INDICTMENT AGAINST THE SHERIFF OF
CHESTER.-- The Cheshire Quarter Sessions
commenced at Knutsford on Monday. A
" true bill" was found by the Grand Jury
against the Sheriff's of the City of Chester for
a misdemeanour, in refusing to take upon
themselves the execution of Garside and
Mosley, the two men under sentence of death
in Chester Castle, for tihe murder of the late
Mr. Ashton. A similar bill, presented against
the High Sheriff of the County was thrown
out. The indictment will be removed bv cer-
torari into the Court of King's Bench, and
thus the question of liability will be brought
under discussion before the only tribunal com-
petent to decide upon it --Manchester Courier.
RATIONALITY.--At tie " Rational" Lecture
Room (Rational par excellence), Grosvenor-
street, Millbank. on Wednesday evening, the
Rev. Robert Taylor delivered a lecture on
morality ; after which, Mr. Carille read, by
way of comment, a correspondence between
the Rev. Lecturer and himself, relative to a
lady who was seated near him. The whole
meeting then exhibited its superior rationality,
by dividing in parties, and going to fisty-enffs.
Mr. Carlile most rationally thumped the Rev.
R. Taylor, whose blood was rationally scatter-
ed about, and the son of Mr. Cartile was
thrashed in a manner no less rationally by the
Rev. Mr. Taylor's party. Who can doubt
the superior, nay perfect rationality, of the
whole scene ?
HUMAN STRENGTH.--From the result of
experimtents made at Portsmouth Dock yard
in driving and pressing in large iron and
copper bolts, a man of medium strength strik-
ing with a mallet weighing eighteen pounds,
and the handle of which was forty four inches
long, would start a bolt about one eighth of an
inch every blow. It required a pressure of
107 tons to press the same bolt down the same
quantity of space, but a small additional
weight pressed it completely home.--Somer-
setshire Gazette.
