WALSH ISLAND TROUBLE.
WORKS CLOSED DOWN.,
Employees Raid Off.
NEWCASTLE (NJ3.W.), March. 16.-in
compliance with the recent(deeision of the
State Cabinet, following the dispute with
the boilermakers. the Walsh Island Dock
yard was closed down at 5 .o'clock- this
afternoon, and all the employees with'the
exception of 50 men retained for the main
tenance of the plant, were paid off.
The members of the Federal executive
of the Boilermakers* Society have been
communicated with by .telegram as tp their
attitude in regard to the piecework dis
pute, and it -is on their replies that any
hopes of an early resumption of activities
now rest. Should the executive officers
advise that the meri may return to work
under. the conditions prevailing before the
strike, it is understood that. the Govern
ment will take steps immediately to re
open ihe^dockyard. At the earliest it is
not anticipated that replies from all mem
bers t)f the Federal executive, will be to
hand before the beginning of next week.
