RUSSIAN PEASANTRY.
Increase of Drunkenness.
RIGA, Jan. 13. — Soviet oflicials who are
touring the country to induce the peasants
to subscribe to the Soviet loan have been
named to discover that t.h(» ntrrionltiirists
are demanding public houseB similar to
those of Western Europe, and wish to
secure relaxation without being compelled
to listen to political lectures and Commun
ist reports.
The officials declare that there has
been an alarming increase of drunkenness.
The peasants are spending one fifth of
their incomes in drink at the village clubs
which the Soviet founded.
