NEW' BRITISH COINS.
Crown Re-introduced.
As the result of a proclamation that*
came into effect on December 1 five
shilling pieces have been re-introduced in
England, and there have been sevefal
cnanges m tne designs of silver coins.
Five-shilling pieces have riot been
minted in England since 1902. The ob
verse of the new coins is unchanged ex
cept that' the words 'Fid. Def. Ind. Imp.'
are omitted from the inscription on this
side, though they appear on the reverse.
The Royal Crown is substituted for an
? image of St. George attacking the dra
gon on the reverse.
She new features ? of the half-crown
are the initial letters of the King's 'name
on each side of the shield and the pre
sence of the national emblems, rose.
' thistle and shamrock, interspersed 'with
the date: The Garter ' surrounding the
shield and -bearing the motto 'Honi eoit
quintal y pense'.is absent from the new
design'. .. . ? '
The obverse of.^the new florin is the
same as the crown. On the reverse the
seeptors are arranged differently, the
King's initials - are placed in the centre
and the inscription 'Fid Def.' Ind. Imp.'
is added. '
There is no material:- change from the
old design as regards the new shilling
but the sixpence and threepence are' con-,
siderably altered. On : the .reverse of the
sixpence' six -acorns growing -from in
terlaced oak branche-:. with the words
'Sixpence' :??'??!. the date, replace .the old
design, which was the Royal crest; The
inscription 'Fid. Def. Ind. Imp.' i?
added to the obverse. Three acorns grow
ing' from interlaced oak twigs repiac
the design of the old threepence.
