BIG ROADS PROGRAMME.
MR. TINDALE TO GO ABROAD.
' A WbrldrRoving Commis
sion,
The Government has decided that Mr.
Tindale,' chairman of the Main Roads
Joard, shall proceed abroad in order that
he may obtain knowledge of the latest
methods of road construction in different
countries, and secure the latest plant
procurable for the work to be done in
Western Australia, especially in view of
he 'heavy future expenditure under the
ITederal Aid Roads agreement.
It appeared to the iGovernment that -the
expenditure of a thousand' pounds or so
in this connection would be a good inves+
raent, the Minister for Works (Mr. A.
McCallum) explained yesterday, 'as - it
might mean the saving of many thousands
of pounds in connection with the big road
programme afoot.
'The Alain Roads Board, under the
federal scheme,' 'the Minister added,
'will be responsible for the expenditure
of £570.000 a year. In addition to this,
the State, expects a further £100.000.
for five years under the -migration agrec
?ment. The Board will also have charge
of ' all the roads and bridges work con
nected with' tlie Public Works Depart
ment. -It '-will Ire , further 'called upon .to
advise many of the local, authorities in
connection with their road' workX so' it
can be said that approximately £1,000,000
a year' on 'road work will come either
directly or-mdirectlyi.under its authority.
The Government is anxious that the best
results should' be obtained for the' ex-
penditure, and it appeared that it would
?be good policy for Mr. Tindale to go
abroad 'at: once, so that the State will
Kaye the full ben&fit of the experience
gained- over the term- of the agreement
between the Commonwealth and the State
Government. -,, Mr. Tindale will not be re
stricted in his mov-emants. ? He'wHl visit
England and -the Continent, and return
via America, and lhe;iGovermneut feels
that the knowledge he will gain as the
result of the trip will be of considerable
a4vanta?e' to Western Australia.'
M-c. Tindale will probably- leave about
January' 17. -Mr. Ankctell' will' act as
chairman of the Main Roads Board dur
ing Mr. Tindale'-s absence.
