AN OMISSION.
TO THE EDITOR.
I am, Sir, &c
A LOOKER-ON.
Sir—I noticed that the inscription on the docu- <*>
ment deposited under the foundation-stone of the
New Methodist Connexion Chapel, laid last Monday,
contained a notable omission—at least as it appears
to me—especially when contrasted with the speech
of the minister of that denomination, who, in re
hearsing his articles of belief, included the very
matter omitted—the Holy Spirit. The document
begins:—
"To the Honor of God the Father, and of His
Son Jesas Christ, the Saviour of men, this foun
dation-stone, &c" Not a word about the Holy
Spirit.
It is generally the practice of all Christians except
Unitarians to make some allusion to the Divine
Trinity, but from the instance before us either the
New Methodists hold some peculiar tenet about this
point, or it was a careless act of the scribe. If we
are to have chapels emulating the sacerdotal preten
sions of the elder branches of the Christian Church,
with v spires," X Gothic style," •* archivolts," " audi
torium," " traceried windows," " clustered shafts,"
"foliated capitals," "green glass," "dim religious
light," &&, Ac, let us take care that we lay the foun
dation on none other than that is laid, which is the
Holy Trinity.
Perhaps, however, all my premises are false, and
that the New Methodist Connexion has some new
speculative dogma upon this very point. I should j
infer so, as they have built their church on a foun
dation-stone that excludes all reference to the exist
ence of the Holy Spirit.
[We are perfectly satisfied that the omission to
which our correspondent refers was purely acci
dental.—Ed.]
