TOPICS OF THE DAY.
The House of Assembly was occupied yesterday
afternoon with the consideration of the Thistle and
Burr Act, introduced by Mr. Magarey with the view
of checking die spread of those obnoxious plants
All other business was postponed.
We beg to draw attention to the advertisements
announcing that funeral eermona Cor (tie Rev. T. Q.
Stow will be preached on Sunday morning at the
various Congregational Churches in AAJmJM ami th o
neighbourhood.
The funeral of the late Mr. James Chambers will
start from his late residence, North Adelaide, at 2
o'clock to-day. Mr. Chambers having been one of
the earliest colonists, we have collected some
particulars of interest respecting him, and which we
shall probably publish on Monday, with a
subsequent notice of his funeral.
Their Honors, the Judges, assembled at the Su
preme Court, on Friday, for the dispatch of business,
but in consequence of none of die bar being in
attendance die Court was adjourned.
It will be seen from the report of the last meeting
of the Municipal Corporation that a communication
had been received from officers of volunteer com-
panies complaining of the shocking condition of the
entrances to the South Park Lands opposite the
Butts, and praying that some repairs might be
effected. The Council generally thought it the duty
of the Government to effect these repairs, and we
think so too, most decidedly. It is the traffic to and
from the Butts that has converted the entrances to
the South Park Lands into the miserable quagmires
with which nearly every one is now familiar; and we
may here ask—whose property are these Butts? who
erected the Butts? by whom are they controlled?
They do not belong to the Corporation, and are not
under the management of the Corporation. The rifle
ranges on the South Park lands,
together with the
butts and targets, constitute part of a Government
department, and it is most certainly the duty of the
Government, and not of die Corporation, to make
the gate entrances passable. At present they are not
merely filthy in the extreme, but almost impassable.
We have seen cars and cabs bogged most effectually
in these clay pits, and as a very few loads of metal
would at least make the gateways passable we hope
the Government will see to it. Perhaps some member
of the House of Assembly will call attention to the
matter.
The Ckaetts at Thursday contained the Hevenae
Statement for die quarter and year ending June 80
last. The income of die quarter was £l£2£os
showing a decrease of £21,101; die income of die
year was £507,189, showing a of JS4SJBU.
We refrain, at present, from entering into die ?*— ?w
as we are anxious to dear off numerous ktterxof
correspondents, local reports, Ac, already in type.
