WORKING MEN'S INSTITUTE
Last evening, the bi-annual meeting of the
Working Men's Institute was held in the
Reading-room of that institution. The Right
Rev. Bishop Parry occupied the chaikr,tíb 6- The
Secretary read the minutes of the
last meeting, which was adopted''"'' ' ll
The report and financial statement was
read, which disclosed a very favourable state
of affairs. The number of books' were stated
to be well kept up : the roll of members had
increased by 12, and as regards the finance
the receipts for the half year had been
£105 18s. 3d.! against 'expenditure of
£77 13s. 3d., leaving a credit balance of
628 5s. It was stated that the daily number
of readers was 29, and 690 volumes had been
issued during the half year.
'The Chairman congratulated the Institute
upon the progress it had made in the past
few years. He thought the number of members,
113, and the daily average, number of
readers, was very good, and their finances
were in a very satisfactory condition'.. Such
institutions as these were most useful "(fees.
There was no doubt that before long the
working men would have considerably increased
influence in the affaira"irf-"the colony,
and it was very important that thsy!shoold<
have an opportunity of reading the literature
of the day. That institution was doing a
most useful work, and they ought, to their I
boat to? draw others to it. He congratulated,
the institution on Caving asked the fwTtdation;
of what would no doubt be a most useful institution.

The following committeemen were then
elected by ballot:-Messrs..Speight, Thompson,
Salt, Sloan, Barrington, Liddelow, and
Gribble. The meeting
closed with a vote of thanks
to the chairman, which was received with
