COWARDLY ASSAULT.
Police Constable Injured.
Signer. Dee. 23.
One man was shot and another
severely injured with a baton, and the
constable who fired the shot and used
the baton was badly knocked about in
a sensational, fight in Wellington-street,
Waterloo, to-night, between i) and 10
o'clock. Constable Forrest, a young
member of the force, warned two men
and two women who were behaving in
an offensive manrer. The two women
and oae of the men at once walked
away, but the other man stayed, and,
the constable aftenwards stated, pro
ceeded to abuse him. On Constable For
rest tailing the man he was- going to
arrest him for offensive behaviour the
man struck hhn on the- mouth. The
constable drew his baton, an action
taken by .the crowd which had gathered
as a signal to attack, and he was knocked
down and badly haudled before recover
ing his feet He managed to get has
back against a wall, and, drawing his
revolver, threatened to shoot if the
crowd did not disperse. The crowd con
tinued to menace him, and. were rushing
again to attack when he fired three
sho.-s at point-blank range. One man
staggered and fell, but was picked up by
others ami carried away. Another con
stable arrived, and the mob ran away.
During his struggle with the mob Con
stable Forrest used his baton freely,
.striking down several of his assailants.
A liitle distance from where the fight
occurred ano.her constable found a man
bleeding freely from wounds on the top
of his head, caused, it. as alleged, by
Constable Forrest's baton. The man,
whose name 19 iPercy Birmingham, was
arrested, and was 'taken to the hospital
with Constable Forrest, where both re
ceived treatment Constable . Forrest's
injuries were found to be severe. He
is badly cut and bruised about the face
and body.
