THE CHINESE QUESTION. A I F
-1- ?" , 5
To The EDITOR.
In the Daily'Neibs of 12th Inst appears a
letter signed by 'f Reformatory' who writes
nominally on the Chinese Question, and at the
saWe'tihie'extols''ihé1 system of exclusive
dealing, and, fellowship known, and practised
in Ireland viz'.,-" boycotting."
That any man living in a free country like
Australia should advise the adoption of such
'a system, with its many attendant incidents
of ruffianly oppression, is to be deplored. 9
Australians as a rule have not so far shown'
any desire to adopt such old world notions as
to deprive their fellows of equal rights under
the law of the land ; but even if it were possible
to adopt the suggestion of " Beef ormator "
it might prove a greater calamity to "find the
class prejudices so often seen of late years
in Ireland) flourish in Australia than to allow
Chinamen right to live amongst, and "ade
with those who choose to allow them.
Some legal restrictions may eventually be
required to exclude Chinese in large numbers,
but I for one moptteaniestly hope we shall
'never see established in these colonies any
system of oppression, such as boycotting with
its train of plans, murders, cattle maiming,
so, for as has been amply proved in Ireland
from boycotting to Plans of Campaign
leaders, ' Ac, is such a very short "step
that the head of the Catholic Church has seen
fit expressly forbid any exercise of the
system, and has commanded his clergy to discourage
it by every means in their power. 1
