GRIFFIN COAL.
To the Editor, 'The West Australian.'
Sir. — The Commissioner of Railways
(Mr. E. A. Evans), in an interview pub
lished in your issue of the 8th instant,
comparing the value of Griffin coal with
that produced from the other mines in
Collie, stated that based on its calorific
value. Stockton coal is commercially us
able at 17/0 a ton. The calorific Value
of Griffin coal is well up to the stan
dard of 10.000 B.T.U. and is worth 19
per ton. according to the value and basis
ot payment to the other mines. Fire
iiox tests in regard to the coal hav*?
been repudiated by the Collie miners as
a fair basis, and they have 'insisted' on
the calorific value being paid. The Com
missioner states that on firebox tests
he cannot pay the calorific value for Gritiin
coal and values it at 16/ per ton.
Mj§ experience as sole agent for Griffin
Coal Mining Co., Ltd., allows me to as
ssrt that all my customers receiving that
coal are more than satisfied. The coal
is of such a nature as to give them the
full calorific results, and in many cases
when Collie coal -was deemed unusable
and where ?Cew South Wales hard coal
had been used, Griffin has now displaced
it. I am sure that as this mine is fur
ther developed, the results will be even
more satisfactory. — Yours, etc.,
