Y.B.C. SPRING MEETING.
CUP DAY. .
NEWHAVEN THE VICTOR
THE DERBY WINNER CONTINUES
HIS TRIUMPH.
LL MELBOURNE, November 3.
The Cup Day attendance at Flemington
to-day was a very large one, and will compare
favourably with those of previous
years. The immense assemblage
included sporting folk from every colony,
the Western Australian contingent being
comparatively small but thoroughly representative,
including as it did Sir Gerard
Smith, Mr. J. Handran Smith asA Mr.
David Harwood.
The Cup race brought the excitement to
fever heat. The Derby winner, Newhaven,
went to the front of his field after passing
the stand for the first time, and was never
afterwards headed, winning ultimately as
he liked by six lengths from Bloodshot,
with The Skipper in third place. The
outsider Reka ran into fifth position,
but the sensational Miracluin ran
at the tail of the field throughout. New-
haven's win was a most popular one and
the crowd cheered the colt to the echo on
his returning to the weighing enclosure.
Gardiner, his jockey, received a great
ovation. The war could not have been
a better one for Victorians generally.
The majority of local ' backers have
supported the colt for some time and the
first prize in Tattersall's biggest consulta-
tion fell to Mrs. Gardiner, wife of the
Malvern trainer, Mr. Joe Gardiner. The
St. Albans stable supplied the first and
third horses in the last race of the day, the
Yan Yean Stakes, Merman winning with
Dawes up.

When the sheds were reached Beau Brummel
still held command from Acton, Man
of Honour, and Pilatus. At the sheds
Malula ran up into second place, with
Acton, Cinder Ellen, and Man of Honour
next. At the turn Acton was in the load,
but into the straight Cinder Ellen's
colours were showing first, with Acton
and Beau Brummel next, and Merman
coming fast on the outside. A great
struggle home, and what looked like a
dead-heat was given a half head verdict
in favor of Merman, a head only separat-
ing Pilatus from Cinder Ellen. Time,
