MADAGASCAR.
THE REVOLT GENERAL
London, October 18.
News has been received at the
French War Office intimating that
the revolt in Madagascar has become
general, and that reinforcements are
urgently needed.
[General Gallien, who was appointed to
the control of affairs in the island in place
of M. Laroche, recalled, arrived at the
island at the beginning of the month, and
onbeingimmediately attacked by the insurgents
proclaimed a state of siege. A telegram,
from Paris was recently published in
a London contemporary as follows :-" Probably
there will be no more prominent
figure in French public life for months to
come than that of General Gallien.
His mission is an important one
for France. The work of General Duchesne
is incomplete. Madagascar has yet to be
conquered. General Gallieni's task is difficult
and delicate. It is one thing to
* annexe and it is quite another thing to
maintain order." The new Dictator is
worthy of the confidence reposed in him
by his Government. Both at Senegal and
Upper Nile, Gallieni proved himself to be a
plucky soldier and an intrepid explorer.
He is said to be quick in decision and
masterful in action. In method and or
ganisations is square-headed, and scarcely
ever makes a mistake. One of the reasons
why General Gallien has been selected for
his present task is on account of his
judicious and statesmanlike qualities. He
is no blind advocate of sword rule, and
much is expected from him as a wise and
prudent governor."]
