STATEMENT BY MR
GLADSTONE.
NO GRANT FROM PARLIAMENT.
London, May 26.
In the House of Commons last night
Mr. Gladstone was asked if it was the
intention of the Government to ask Par-
liament-te make a special grant to the
Duke of York and the Princess May on
their marriage. Mr. Gladstone replied
that it was not the intention of the Government
to make any such application. By a
resolution of the House, agreed to on
July 26th, 1889, it was agreed that " it
is expedient to grant to Her Majesty, out
of the Consolidated Fund, an annual sum
not exceeding £36,000, to continue until
six months after the demise of Her
Majesty, and to be applied for the benefit
of the children of H.R.H. the Prince of
Wales." The Government had no inten-
sion of asking Parliament to depart from
the course marked out in that resolution.

The International Miners' Conference,
now sitting at Brussels, has, by a large
majority, resolved that surface workers
ask mines should have the benefit of the
eight-hours' working day as well as the
miners.

Miss Dagmar Berne, formerly of
Sydney, has received the appointment of
clinical assistant at the Hospital for
Women, Euston-road, London.

ROME.
AFFECTIONATE GREETING BY
THE POPE.
London, May 26.
The Australian pilgrims to Rome
were received by the Pope yesterday.
His Holiness greeted them affectionately,
and expressed gratification at the amount
of Peter's Pence contributed by the
faithful in Australia. Cardinal Moran
was unable, owing to illness, to be present
at the reception.
REPORTED PURCHASE OF
NEW EXPLOSIVE BY SIAM.
London, May 26.
This morning's Daily Chronicle states
that the British Government having refused
to purchase a new explosive called
ripples, invented by Mr. Boyd, an
Australian resident in India, the King of
Siam has offered to buy it, in view of
hostilities breaking out between Siam and
France.

At Drumcondra, about ten miles from
Dublin, a female parachutist has been
killed while making a descent. She fell
a distance of 150 feet.

The hemp market is depressed. New
Zealand hemp is quoted at 23 per
ton
