AMATEUR ATHLETICS
Cross-Country Championships
The Events To-day
Although lt is unfortunate that tho
Tasmanian Amateur Athlotle Association
has struck the same day ns that on
which the football final is to bo played,
there should still bo a good crowd of
supporters at the Elwick racecourse this
afternoon to witness tho three cross
country championships that are being
heh] there. Tho first event, which ls
timed to start at 3.15 p.m., is the South-
ern Tasmanian Associated Public
Schools 5 miles cross-country champion-
ship, and tho four Southern public
schools will , be competing, and will be
represented by the following teams:
St. Virgil's College.-T. Lane, J.
Moses, T>. Eyles, R. Cosgrove, H. Hughes,
A. "Waters.
Clemes College.-R. Stump, W. Lester,
J. Keen, M. Cross, A. Risby, J. Fitz-
gerald.
Hutchins School.-G. Morgan, G. Mc-
Kay. D. Robertson, AV. Bowerman, D.
Mcphee, D. Ireland, C. Shaw.
Friends High School.-P. Unwin. W.
Gunn, B. Cox, K. Gourlay. IC. Gabriel,
H. Mather, W. Howie, W. Creese, R.
Howie, E. Williams, A. Harrison.
From information that can bo gather-
ed Friends High (title holders) and
Hutchins seem likely to fight out tho
teams championship, whilst . Unwin and ¡
Gunn (Friends), Morgan (Hutchlns),
Stump and Lester (Clemes) look Uko
i championship. Very little ls known of
I the calibre of the St. Virgil's College
team, but Lane and some of his team
mates may be quite capable of breasting
the tape first.
, Following the Public Schools Cham-
pionship ls the Tasmanian State Schools
ll miles C.C.C. Moonah (holders),
Elizabeth Street, and New Town have
already intimated that they will be field-
ing teams, and as post entries will be
taken it'is quito probable that several i
moro schools will enter teams.
The last, and most important, event of
the afternoon, is tho Tasmanian 10,000
metres cross-country championship,
which,, like tho flvo miles event, starts
with a lap on the course, then out over
tho surrounding country and bade to tho
course, doing a lap and a quarter on the
course to finish, in all a little over six
miles. Tho various clubs will bo repre-
sented as follows:
New Town Harrier Club,-B. M. Horne,
C. H; Harvey,. A. Roach, C. Hallam, 13.
Holllday, W. L. Round, A. Purdy. G.
Johnstone, B. Beltz.
Sandy Bay Harrier Club.-T. Slanwix,
A. Robertson, F. Anowsky, \V. Chandler,
K. Collins, A. Hallam, H. Evans, J. Tay-
lor. Xi. Owen.
Launceston Harrier Club.-C. Sice.
Old Hobartlans Athletic Club.-TV.
Barwick. YV. Millar, J. Millar, R. John-
stone. Rf. Glover.
Unfortunately. Launceston Is repre-
sented by only ono man, and therefore
will not bo competing In tho teams
championship, for which New Town
(holders) look like having a hard
struggle lo hold the title against Sandy
Bay and Old Hobartlans. With Barwick
(O.H.A.) and Robertson (S.B.) both
doubtful starters, tho fight for tho Indi-
vidual championship should be between
Horne, Roach and Harvey (New Town),
Stanwix and Evans (Sandy Bay). W.
Millar (Old Hobartlans), and Sloe
(Launceston).
