RETURN OF MR.
THEODORE
Opposition Attitude
Canberra, October 29.
Nationalist and Country Party mem- <*>
bers returned to Canberra to-day to
attend meetings of their parties, and
the main subjects of discussion were
the return of Mr. Theodore and the
Inflation proposals of the left wing of
the Labor Party.
The leader of the Opposition (Mr.
Latham) stated that members of the
Opposition had refrained from any
attempt to exploit the Theodore case.
Mr. Theodore had resigned his port
folio when the Royal Commission's
findings regarding the Mungana leases
were published, but the Nationalist
Party was of the opinion that Jf Mr.
Theodore re-entered the Ministry be
fore he had been cleared of these
charges, there would be a disastrous
effect on Australia's oositlon overseas.
It would probably be made a major
issue.
Inflation Opposed
Regarding the inflation proposals, the
view is held that anything which meant
political control of currency would be.
fought by the Opposition at every
stage in both Houses, and, if necessary,
the Government would be forced to ask
for a double dissolution.
When the Nationalist Party met at
II ajn. It was at once made evident
that the Government would have to
meet much criticism for its delay In
submitting financial reconstruction
proposals to Parliament. While the
OpDosition policy is naturally depen
dent on the result of to-day's final
session of the Labor caucus, the gene
ral attitude of Mr. Latham and his
followers wfil be to facilitate any mea
sures which can be Interpreted as a
reasonable effort to observe the spirit
of the Nlemeyer agreement.
This Tear's Budget
Even the Opposition now tacitly
admits that, on account of the Gov
ernment's policy of procrastination In
economising, it will be practically im
possible to balance the Budget during
the present finnnniyi year. While it
will attack the Government for this
and its failure to adopt Mr. Latham's
£4,000.000 economy proposals several
months ago. it win support any pro
posals which represent a sincere effort
to mate the best of the position as
it is.
