Doradus Wins a Double
Mallee King Successful
Tlie Brighton Jockey Club held a very '
Pleasant meeting on its picturesque
country course yesterday. Tho weather
«as gloriously fine, and the meeting
drew a surprisingly largo crowd from
Hobart and surrounding districts. Un-
fortunately, the fields, with the excep-
tion of the two trotting events, were
Email, and consequently the betting was
by no meant, in proportion to the at-
tendance. For tho most part, however, j
the racing was keen and the finishes
enciting- It was unfortunate that the
meeting should have clashed with the
jlxturo at Mowbray, particularly at such
a lute stago in the racing season. It
«as inevitable that entries should be
small, and it is to be hoped that next
teason a clash of dates will be obviat-
ed, and so allow owners to give their
patronago to both meetings. The to
tahsator staff handled £5,381 10s on the
seven taces, of which £2,854 10s was
invested on tho two trotting events
alone. The course was in excellent
condition, and tho efficient' organisation
reflected the greatest credit on the sec-
retary (Mr. W. N. James) and other
officers of the club. Details:

NOTES ON THE RUNNING
Doradus Too Classy
(By "Leander.")
With only five runners, and two o:
them being bracketed, naturally specu-
lation was on the light side for the
llighwelght Handicap. Mr. G. H. Cann'!
pair wero backed down to 10 to 4 or
favourites, and one of thom-Doradus
fully justified th,e confidence reposed ir
him by leading practically all the way
and winning comfortably from the im
pioving Royady, who made a dash at the
leader in the straight. Without avail,
however, for Doiadus was galloping well
within himself. Some few yards off the
post the latter appeared to bo star-
gazing about, and Wreghitt had to give
him a stiipe with the whip on the shoul-
der to prevent him from stopping alto-
gether. Ryhlll threatened danger three
fui longs from home, but petored out In
the straight, and could only finish third,
just In advance of Telamón. Cathkln's
Pet was never dangerous.
BELLE JOLIE'S FÍRST SUCCESS.
By scoring In the Trial Handicap, Belle
Jolle realised expectations, and inci-
dentally registered nor first success.
She Is only a pony, but Is a game little
sort. That sho should gallop is demon-
strated by the fact that sho is a daugh-
ter of Syklon, siro of Trivalvo and
many other noted performers. At the
straight entrance it looked as though
Mercian Prince, who was assisted by a
much, lighter weight, might wear her
down, but, as usual, bo put little heart
into his work, and was easily beaten.
Belle Jollo kept running in from the
whip, and Morris was forced to give up
riding her on a couple of occasions to
heave her out, but she won easily just
the same. Nancy K. showed a little dash
for "a. while, but both sho and Lady
Ilermlno were outclassed. The winner
is trained and Is held on lease by E.
McCombo, who has not been experienc-
ing the best of luck for quite a while.
She was ridden a vigorous race by H.
Morris.
MALLEE KING EASILY.
Mallee King was served up a very
warm favourite for the Firat-elass Trot,
which was probably duo to the fact that
B. Lewis waa in charge of him. The
handsome son of Bonnie Voyage hit the
front leaving the straight, and won un
extended from Trebla, who looked as
though ho might trouble the winner two
furlong» from home, but Mallee King
vías only jogging, and ran right away
again. There uas a desperate duet for
third place between the square-galtcd
horses Small Bells and Bendigo Mac, in
which the former prevailed. Lu Lu
Baby came with a rattle over the latter
stages, but she was too late, and could
only end up fifth. Prince Gothra was
closo up most of the way, but failed to
maintain his advantage. Tho Ape m.ide
a bold front towards the finish, and may
do better at lils next start. Lady Ilona
broke up at a critical Btage.
BERAFUS AGAIN.
A straggling start spoilt the Robert
James Handicap. The six horses wore
on the move and facing the barrier, but
Mr. T. Piesse, the starter, halted them
right on tho tapes Kinglet and Gunda-
booka wero In the act of turning round
when the lever was pressed with the te
sult that tiie former was left several
lengths, and Gundabooka also lobt a
little ground Lanoro, as usual, shot out
to the front, but was never far away
from Berafus and Ernie B. Berafus
headed the mare into the straight, where
Gundabooka tluew out a 6tiong chal-
lenge, but just failed to overhaul him
Lanoro battled on gamely, but had no
chance with the flrst two. Kinglet
finished leally well, and ,ho might luve
been proclaimed the winner, but for his
bad start. As the raco was run, Gundi
booka appeared to be a little unlucky to
lose, for he made up a lot of ground over
the latter stages. Lycurgldes mado very
Uttlo headway, and was always In the
rear. Ernie B. petered out two furlongs
from home.
BEN HALL IN FORM.
There waa a fair amount of comedy
attached to the start for the Jumpers'
Flat, When tho field Wa3 called up Lalla-
rata reared, and knocking her attendant
over, gave another bound or two and
dislodged her rider, G. Viney. She
careered around the course, and several
minutes elapsed before she waa caught.
After being remounted the mare jibbed
until a couple of onlookers carno to the
rt'scue, and they actually pushed her to
the machine. Lallarata was first away
when the- tapes wero released, and set
a merry paco to the straight entrance.
Ben Hall headed her at this point, and
finishing well, was not all out to win by
several lengths from the fast-finishing
Nolle Prosequl. Lallarata tiree! In the
straight, and was beaten on the post for
third place by Proud King, who carno
with his customary belated" run after
being half a furlong away at the six
furlongs. Padorus and Miewalle show-
ed a fair amount of dash for a time.
DOUBLE TO DORADUS.
In spite of the small field for the Win-
ter Oats, It provided a Ano race, although
Mr. G. H. Cann's Doradus completed a
winning double fairly comfortably. With
i the exception of Cathkln's Pet, the other
four runners wore nicely bunched en-
tering the straight, where Montebello
? threw out a challenge, but Doradus, who
was under the whip at this stage, easily
! stalled him off and won without further
punishment Montebello ran a sur-
prisingly good race considering he had
only received a light preparation owing
to lameness. Telamón, who mado the
early pace with Doradus, again weaken-
ed-In the run to the judge, and was
beaten by Cathkln's Pet for fourth place.
Tho latter came from a long way back.
Doradus is a fine, big stamp of a gold-
ing, and is a four-year-old full-brother
to Nasmyth, Danton, and Loretto, all of
whom were great gallopers.
TARZAN "WALKS" IN.
There is no doubt about Tarzan belna
a fit horse, for ho ran out the two mile*
yesterday with the greatest of ease.
Nover at any stage did he reach his top,
and when S, Harris asked him to put a
move on the speedy son of Emulate ran
post the leaders as if the opposition
were standing still. Ho came Into the
straight about 50 yards in advance of
Fair Nut, who recorded a solid perform-
ance to finish second. Jack Adonis
looked a good thing to run third, but
tired to a walk over tho final 100 yards
and was beaten for a placo by Princess
Wilkes. June M. displayed a lot of dash
for a mile and set tho field a merrv
dance, but then dropped out. The Card
refused to lea'vo, and tho field had tra-
velled a couple of furlongs before he
moved off. With the exception of Rosev
Lynn and Charlie M., the remainder
were nover In the hunt. Tarzan reduced
his record by 10 seconds, and the geld-
ing, who has come very solid, was ridden
a confident raco by his trainer, S. Har-
ris.
KINGLET'S RUNNING QUESTIONED.
At tho conclusion of the Robert
James Handicap at the Brighton Jockey
Club's meeting yesterday, Stipendiary
stoward C. II. Keen questioned the run-
ning of Kinglet in that race. G. Viney,
rider of the gelding, stated that ho rode
to orders, and that the horse would
probably have won but for getting bad-
ly away through no fault of his. T.
Best, trainer of Kinglet, corroborated
Vinoy's evidence, stating that the horse
had only a light preparation, and ho
was quite satisfied by tho manner in
which Viney handled him. Their ex-
planations were accepted.

Granduale Scores in Hurdle
Although the prospects for a fine day
wore not bright, the meeting of the Tas-
manian Turf Club at Mowbray yester-
day was carried out without rain fall-
ing. Tho afternoon was cold, and con-
sidering the heavy rain that had fallen
the course and lawns wero not as muddy
as might have been expected. The at-
tendance was hardly as good as on Sat-
urday, nor wero the fields as large. Bet-
ting was fairly good, £3,210 passing
through the totalisator, compared with
£4,110 last year and £5,061 in 1925
There was no meeting in 192G.
Several good dividends wero paid,
and tho racing was interesting. Two
jumping races wero included In the
programmer There was one fall, and it
proved harmless to horse and rider.
Mr T. R. J. Affleck, of Longford, secured
a double with Garuda and Savltra, The
event of the day was the threo miles
Brush Steeplechase, which attracted a
big field. The winner, Strathbarton,
gave a fine performance, leading all th<?
way, and finishing full of running. This
horse stays well, and has a lot of pace,
and may pay his way over fences on
the mainland. St. Joseph's Band pro-
vided a programme of music, and tho
general arrangements wer« satisfactorily
carried out under tho supervision of the
secretary (Mr. Andrew Raeburn).
An inquiry was held by the stewards
Into tho reason M. Cahill pulled up
Etumos in the Steeplechase. The
vuterlnary surgeon sahl tho horse
limped as the result of an old Injury.
Cahill said he noticed the limp, and dis-
mounted. His explanation was accept-

NOTES ON THE RACING
Surprise in Hurdle Race
(By "Malua.")
The V.R.C. Birthday meeting was con-
cluded at Flemington to-day, and the
prospect of seeing tho National favour-
ites attracted a very large crowd. Back-
ers fared badly, only one favourite win-
ning.
Urban!, the most popular candidate
for the Grand National, was made a hot
favourite for the Hurdlo Race. Ho gave
a moderato display, and beat only one
horse home. The race resulted in a sur-
prise victory for Royan, who led over
the lost hurdle, and In a neck-and-neck
struggle lasted long enough to defeat
Biologist, who finished well. The latter,
is improving with every race. WInalone
raino home well. Nobility ian fairly.
Gift was ahvaVH prominent, but weak- I
cued towards the end. Royan is trained '
by P. Padfleld, and Is engaged In the
National with 9.0.
The Rothsay Trial was productive of
a fine finish. Considerable merit was
attached to the victory of Buckeen, who
was pocketed entering the straight. He
finished with a good run, and won
handsomely from Fortune's Bubble, who
ran a really good race. Shelmerdene
hung on well to finish third. Nipal and
Batteryman's stylish half-brother,
Woorgun, did best of the unplaced divi-
sion. Swig missed tho jump out, and
was never dangerous.
Puntéis suffered a reverse In tho Lan-
caster Handicap, in which Highland re-
gistered a splendid weight-carrying per-
formance. Numenia led early from Haw-
ick and Rodler. Hawick and Highland
were on terms at the distance. In a
great finish Highland responded game-
ly, and just sei ambled home. Phonic
showed improved form. Pytchley shap-
ed best of the others. Stage Saint did
not onco flatter his supporters.
CHAUMONT'S ATTRACTIVE WIN.
Chaumont greatly enhanced his pros-
pects for the National by winning the
Prince of Wales Steeplechase. Nyangay
made the early tunning, but he baulked
at tho post and rails In front of the
stand. Chaumont revelled in his jump-
ing, and had the race won a good way
from home. Deiision made a valiant ef-
fort to overhaul Chaumont, but failed
to extend the National favourite. Late
Night was a fair third. Nyangay com-
pleted tho course. Chaumont was rid-
den by tho crack amateur horseman, Mr.
C. Grice, who will ride in his immediate
engagements.
Ataman gavo a taste of his galloping
ability in the Birthday Handicap. The
pace was slow in the early stages. St.
Lazar made most of the running, and led
into the stiaight from Speormaiden and
Bavaroy. Ataman unwound a great run
in tho straight, and displaying rare
gamencss narrowly defeated Spear
malden, who was a bit unlucky in run-
ning. St. Lazar ian a good race. King's
Consoit was Interfered with at a criti-
cal stago of tho race, and was running
on well at tho post. Ataman is trained
by E. Fisher.
Sea Pilot was tho elect of backors for
the Cornwall Welter, but he shaped be-
low expectations, and was beaten be-
fore reaching the distance. In a most
exciting llnibli Millwin got up in time

NOTES ON THE RACING

Valbee's Versatility

(By "Darriwell.")

A few bensons ago Valbee had his at-
tention turned to hurdling, and he was
successful in a race at Moonee Valley.
After that win he vas put back to the
flat, and won, among other races, the
V.R.C. Northcote Handicap and Bruns-
wick Stakes, and ho finished third in
the Australian Cup. The Valais geld-
ing later dead-heated for first in the
Birthday Cup. Valbee -was afterwards
purchased hy the South Australian
sportsman, Mr. K. D. Bowman, and lie
has successfully mixed hurdling with
flat racing in this State also, for, fol-
lowing a few runs over the battens in
Adelaide, he to-day won the Alderman
Cup, of 1? miles, in 3.0?. which is a
State record, the time boating the pre-
vious record by a quarter of a second.
Benoni modo all the running, but he tir-
ed under his 9.5, and Justification looked
all over a winner when he passed the
St. Anton gelding two furlongs from
home. However, G. Mules was waiting
with a well-timed run on Valbee, and
the Valais gelding scored smartly in a
thrilling finish.

Biskra made light of his itnpust of
J0.8 by running right away at the fin-
ish of the Maryattville Handicap, while
the Goodwood Handicap winner, Second
Dale, secured the measure of Keenedge
in the Rose Park Handicap after the
pair had fought out an interesting fin-
ish all the way up the straight.

In tho Hurdle Race on the opening
day of the meeting Pistol Barrel beat
Adit after the pair had had a vigorous
struggle over the last three furlongs,
and there ivas a similar finish in the
race over the battens to-day, Pistol
Barrel again scoring.

The three-year-old St. Anton filly, The
Kirk, who did not race as a two-year
old owing lo an injury, created a sur-
prise by winning the Highweight Han-
dicap, Sho returned a dividend of £61

12s.

Bestman, who had won his last four
steeplechases, fell at the third fence In
the three miles cross-country run to-
day, and the winner was Kilronan, who
had not scored over the Victoria Park
fences for several seasons. The gelding
registered lils first victory in this State
on that course, but, although ho proved
to bo a Morphettville champion, he was
always a failure at Victoria Park until
to-day, when lie led throughout the
lourney.

Mistral won her first race on this
visit to Adelaide when she captured a
division of the juvenile event, in which
she was not headed. Oberon, by Star-
drift, finished from a long way to win
the other division of that race.

Cosmone, a Cosmos filly who was
having lier first public outing, fell In
Mistral's race, and breaking a leg had
to be destroyed.

All of tho visiting horses, with the
exception of Le Souriceau and Red
Tigress, will bo sent to Melbourne to-
morrow. Lo Souriceau, an imported
grey horse by Roi Herode, and Red
Tigress, an imported mare by Sundrlan,
are to go to the Morphettville stud,
owned by Mr. R. M. Hawker, whose wife
has been racing the pair.
