CAUSEWAY
Bridge Spans Destroyed
Hobart Firemen Sum-
moned
Assistance from Railway
Gang
At an early hour yesterday morning
the Hobart Fire Brigade received a call
from tho Railway Department to the
effect -that the railway causeway near
Sorell was on fire, and n'Hking If any
assistance could bo rendered.
When the Garford pump, which was
immediately despatched, reached the
scene, it was found that tho causeway
at the Sorell end was well ablaze, and as
lt was Impossible to get tho engine with-
in pumping distance the fire had to be
tackled with buckets of water. A rail-
way gang shortly afterwards arrived,
and by combined efforts, aided by Mr.
Hanslow, who pulled four miles in a
rowing boat to enable the party to at-
tack the fire from'beneath, the outbreak
eventually was extinguished. Mr. Hans-
low also provided very welcome refresh-
ment for the fire-fighters.
About seven spans of tho bridge por-
tion of tho causeway were destroyed, for
an inclusive distance of about 120 feet.
The unused railway lines aro banging
down almost to tho water level.
It ls supposed that the causo of tho
fire was a spark from a pipe of cigar-
ette igniting tlie tinder-liko wood; the
unused causeway was frequently made
uso of by rabblters and others who
wished to shorten their journey to and
from Sorell by several milos.
