NORTH-EASTERN LICENSING BENCH.
The quarterly meeting of the
Licensing Bench was held at the Petersburg
Courthouse on Thursday and Friday last
before Mr. J. P. Stow, S.K. (chairman), and
Messrs. J. McCamvG. Inglis, F. Hodby, E.
Coe, and WBlianrGoode. The hearing of the
applications for licenses for new bouses
created an unusual amount of interest, and
occupied tbe attention of the- bench
for nearly the whole of the two days.
The application for a new. house atOodla
wirra by Mr. C." W.,Okely was granted. Mr.
-H. Boucaut appeared for the applicant, and
Inspector Hunt appeared in opposition for the
police. Thomas O*Max& applied for a license
ibr a new house at Port Pirie West. Messrs.
A. J. ~MnT«.rVi-l?T< and D. C. Scott appeared
fofthe applicant, and Mr. J. Duncan for the
opposition. Ten witnes?ea gave evidence in
favor andfivefortheoppoeition. The license was
granted |on the casting vote of the chairman.
There were three applications for new hotels
at Petersburg. F. C. Staer'applied for a
license for a hotel to be erected in Main-street,
to be called the Federal Hotel. Mr. KEL
Tamberttand Mr. H. Boucaut appeared for tbe
applicant,' and Messrs. G. Segenhardt and G.
WrHaloonib? for the opposition. Nineteen
witnesses gave evidence in support of the ap
p?mtaa, testifying to the lack of accommoda
tjp^n the town. The oppositioh was quashed
on:lse ground that they were uuable to prove
the Service of notice of opposition. The appli
cation by \Henry Taylor for a' new hotel at
corner of Baflway-terrace and - Littie-Btreet
was heard next. Three witnesses gave evi
dence in favor, the opposition being quashed
on the same ground as in the former case.
Messrs. W. H. Wadey and P. Pendlebury
appeared for. the applicant, and Messrs.
Degenhardt and Halcombe for the opposition.
The application by Mrs. J. Schroeder for a new
hotel in Petersburg West was then heard,
MpMrg. McLachlan and Scott appearing for the
applicant and Messrs. Degenhardt and Hal
combe for the opposition. Eight witnesses
gave evidence in favor of the granting of the
license and nine supported the opposition.
At the conclusion of tro evidence the bench
decided on the casting vote of the chairman
to grant one license. The S.M. said the
evidence produced by F. C. Staer showed
that the present hotels were not cater
ing for the farmers. There appeared
to be only the applicant, his sou, and.a
friend who were asking for the license
for the hotel in Railway-terrace; and
in the case of the application by Mrs.
Schroeder the site was considered unsuitable.
The application by F. C. Staer would there
fore be granted. Six months was allowed to
erect the building. The building proposed to
be erected will cost about £3.000.
