FEDERAL ELECTIONS
Tasmanian Premier's
Comment
"Beaten, and That's the
End of It"
i
MELBOURNE. December 2.
I ine iTemier of Tasmania (Slr. Lyon»)
i was disinclined to comment upon tbo re
I suit of the Federal elections. "We have
i been defeated," he said, "and that is the
end of it. I am not pne of those who
believe in holding a post-mortem after
everv reverse. Comparing the result of
the Tasmanian State elections, at which
the Labour party was returned to office
with a gain of several seats, and the Fede-
ral election, Mr. Lyons said that thc con-
tests had been fought upon different is-
sues. In the State election people had
had to decide simply between the Labour
record in office, and its handling of thc
j State's finances,« and the long record of its
opponents. In the Federal election cam
I paign the people had heeh lcd away by
all sorts of side issues. Tasmania was
plastered with posters," said Mr. Lyons,
"some advertising a large circus, which
was visiting Tasmania at the time, and
others placed there by the Nationalist
party. It was difficult to decide whether
gome posters were advertising the circus
I or Nationalists."
