BAPTIST FOREIGN MISSION
ANNUAL FAIR.
The annual missionary fair and sale of
gift« in connection with the Hobart Bap-
tist Church was held last week.
This church is notable for ita effort«
on behalf of foreign missions, raising, aa
it does, about £6 a week for this pur-
pose, which is more than is subscribed.by
some mainland churches twice its size.
Thc fair had been arranged under the
auspices of the missionary department of
the church, the chairman of which is
Mr. Kippax, «nd ' the secretary MÍSB
Lam pk in, and it was departmental in
constitution, each department of the
church being responsible for a stall. Thc
organiser was Mr. Athol Townley, and
ho is to be congratulated upon the exceed-
ingly pretty "butterfly fair" he had been
instrumental in evolving in the lecture
hall, wherein a very effective picture had
been produced by an artistic arrangement
.of serge paper, of varied colour, and
"ffreenerv.
The stall-holders were aa follow:
Work etalL Mesdames Driscoll, Cumine,
Lake and Franklin; cake stall, Mesdames
Viney and Roberts; kindergarten stall,
Miss Johnson and teachers; meat stall,
Mesdames Hawkes, Humphreys, Anderson
and Newcombe, Miss Livingstone; pro-
duce stall, Miss Gould, Mrs. Levett, and
Miss Hurburgh; Sundoy-school stall, the
Misses Marks, Williamson, and Saunders;
sweet stall, the Misses Jones (2); ice
cream stall Mesdames Forrer end Ben
nott, the Misses Lampkin, and Mr. Kip-
pax; flower stall, Mrs. Leicester, the
Misses Cooper, Williams, and Green-
wood; fruit stall, Messrs. Stephenson and
Cumine; afternoon tea stall, the deacons'
wives and helpers.
I The Rev. F. D. Mitchell (minister of
the church) presided at* the opening, and
welcomed the Director of Education (Mr.
G. V. Brooks), who was to perform the
opening ceremony, and Mrs. Brooks. He
explained that thc proceeds of the fair
were destined for the promotion of the
missionary work in East Bengal, and ex-
pressed delight at tho presence of thc
Sliniater for Education.
The Director of Education, in declaring
the fair open, said that he was very
glad to be at a Baptist function. He
realised the* sacrifice the ladies had made,
and he was in whole-hearted support of
the missionary work which the funds
raised were to benefit
Little Max Viney presented a bouquet
of flowers to Mr«. Brooks, and Mr. Harry
Bidwell expressed the thanks of the church
and congregation to'Mr. and Mrs. Brooks
for their presence.
Immediately following this there wat
.a "pedlars' parade" of kindergarten chil-
dren, attired in fancy costume, who "ped-
dled their wares" under the direction of
Min Johnston*!.
